<p>Defra currently supports a network of 270 monitoring sites in the UK, measuring
concentrations of 13 pollutants (270 sites active as at 12 December 2016). The Environment
Agency manages the UK's national monitoring sites on behalf of Defra and the Devolved
Administrations..</p><p> </p><p>Many local authorities also undertake monitoring separately
for the purpose of Local Air Quality Management. The majority of local authority monitoring
stations are not part of Defra’s national monitoring network as they do not meet the
criteria set out in European legislation.</p><p> </p><p>Further information and pollutant
