The National Planning Policy Framework was developed by CLG in conjunction with Defra and other relevant parties and sets out how air quality needs to be taken into account in planning decisions. This case is ongoing. Measurement data is updated hourly on our website at:</p><p><a href="http://uk-air.defra.gov.uk" target="_blank">http://uk-air.defra.gov.uk</a> for the 142 automatic monitoring sites across the UK.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>While Defra does not monitor air pollution in central and eastern Europe, the UK air quality forecast provided by the Met Office takes account of European emissions and forecast weather conditions.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Defra also operates a network that measures particle numbers, size and composition, providing additional information about sources of particulate pollution. Defra publishes an annual report series, “Air Pollution in the UK”, that details assessments made of pollutants against EU directives and UK legislation. The UK is split into 43 areas comprising 15 non-agglomeration zones (regions) and 28 agglomeration zones (urban areas).
