	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 20/05/2019 answer text <p>Like all pesticides, Roundup (a range of weedkillers containing glyphosate) is subject to strict regulation to ensure that its use will not harm people or have unacceptable effects on the environment.</p><p> </p><p>The European Commission decided in December 2017 to approve glyphosate for continuing use until December 2022. The decision followed a scientific risk assessment by the European Food Safety Authority, which included a very close scrutiny of the evidence on whether glyphosate causes cancer. UK experts participated in that assessment and supported its conclusions.</p><p> </p><p>All pesticide products, including Roundup, are tightly regulated by the Health and Safety Executive. Our working definition of ‘avoidable plastic waste’ is plastic waste that is technically, economically, and environmentally feasible to reuse or recycle, or, where this does not apply, it is (technically, economically, and environmentally) feasible to replace with alternatives that are reusable or recyclable. It is our intention that there will not be any avoidable plastic waste by 2050.</p><p> </p><p>We will be publishing an evaluation plan and indicator framework for the Resources and Waste Strategy later this year. This will set out further details on how we intend to monitor progress to reduce avoidable waste. This will be a living document where we will publish updates as we develop our methodologies to better capture the data and as new evidence comes to light, particularly with the indicator framework. Defra’s Air Quality Grant Programme provides funding to local authorities for projects in local communities to tackle air pollution and reduce emissions which may include action targeting schools. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 20/05/2019 answer text <p>Our consultations on ‘consistency in household and business recycling collections in England’ and on ‘reforming the packaging producer responsibility schemes’ proposed measures for local authorities collecting the same core set of materials for recycling from households and potentially using fees from producers to fund public communication campaigns on recycling.</p><p> </p><p>Our consultations also proposed a mandatory UK wide labelling scheme in which producers label their packaging as recyclable or not recyclable.</p><p> </p><p>These consultations closed on 13 May and we are currently analysing responses and will publish the Government’s response in due course.</p><p> </p><p>Defra currently supports the Waste and Resources Action Programme’s RecycleNow campaign which provides support for local campaigns. This includes prolonging the lives of the materials and goods that we use, and moving away from the traditional ‘linear’ economic model of ‘take, make, use, and throw’.</p><p>For this reason the Government has supported new requirements agreed in the EU for 11 energy related product groups from November 2018 to January 2019.</p><p>The products subject to new requirements include white goods such as household refrigerators, dishwashers and washing machines and washer-dryers. Some of the requirements agreed in these new regulations for white goods related to improving the resource efficiency of the product. They include obligations for manufacturers to design products for ease of dismantling/disassembly and reuse; make spare parts available to repairers and/or end users for ease of repair; provide information on the length of commercial guarantees; provide information as to repair; and provide information as to critical raw material content to facilitate material recovery.</p><p>In the Resources and Waste Strategy for England, we have also committed to drive more sustainable consumption through providing consumers with better information as to the sustainability of their purchasing decisions. If demand management actions included in the recent revised draft water company water resource management plans (WRMPs) are taken, demand is estimated to decrease. Based on WRMP data, the Environment Agency estimates there will be reductions of 783 Ml/d in the next ten years and 1073 Ml/d in the next twenty years.</p><p> </p><p>The region with the highest demand is the South East of England. The region with the lowest water demand is the North East of England. This is the case for both the next ten and twenty years.</p><p> </p><p>The Government is working closely with the water regulators and the water industry to ensure future water demand is met sustainably and water supplies remain secure. This includes the types of emissions from different fuels, the air quality benefits, and the impacts on business and households of switching to cleaner fuels.</p><p> </p><p>Our assessments of emissions of pollutants from domestic combustion sources use a range of data but are based on established international reporting. The range of fuels and appliances used in the UK is large and emissions from each combination vary greatly depending on how the appliance is operated. However, the Government is committed to increasing cycling and walking and making our roads safer for vulnerable users, including cyclists and pedestrians.</p><p> </p><p>The benefits of cycling and walking are considerable. For people, it means cheaper travel and better health. For businesses, it means increased productivity and increased footfall in shops. And for society as a whole it means less congestion, better air quality, and vibrant, attractive places and communities.</p><p> </p><p>The Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy, published in 2017, sets out the Government’s plans for cycling and walking, with an ambition up to 2040 for “making cycling and walking the natural choices for short journeys or as part of a longer journey”.
