answer text <p>The Secretaries of State for Environment and Health recently attended the Clean Air Summit, at which a number of representatives of UNICEF were also present.</p><p> </p><p>UNICEF’s representatives used this opportunity to highlight findings of their report and to discuss its recommendations to reduce the impact of air pollution on the most vulnerable members of society, including our children.</p><p> </p><p>Our Clean Air Strategy is clear that children are impacted by air pollution more than the general population, and all the measures set out in the Strategy will reduce emissions of pollution, improving public health.</p><p> </p><p>The Honourable Member will be aware that air quality is a devolved matter.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p> more like this

answer text <p>Whatever the outcome of negotiations, when the UK leaves the EU, owners of pet dogs, cats and ferrets will be able to continue to travel to the EU with their pets but there may be changes to the system.</p><p> </p><p>We want owners to continue to be able to travel with their animals with the minimum of disruption, whilst maintaining our high biosecurity and welfare standards. However, it’s our duty as a responsible Government to prepare for all eventualities, including a ‘no deal’ scenario.</p><p> </p><p>On 6 November 2018, Defra published guidance on <a href="https://www.gov.uk/guidance/pet-travel-to-europe-after-brexit" target="_blank">Pet Travel to Europe after Brexit</a> in preparation for the possibility of leaving the EU without a deal. The guidance also contains advice on the documents and health preparation required for pets to return to the UK from the EU.</p><p> </p><p>The Department will continue to keep this guidance up to date as the arrangements that allow pet owners to travel to and from the EU with pets after the UK leaves the EU are confirmed.</p>

answer text <p>Defra officials have been working closely with Scottish Government officials, and officials from all Devolved Administrations, on contingency planning for a no deal scenario, including considering potential impacts on the food sector. The UK has a high degree of food security, built on access to a range of sources including strong domestic production and imports from other countries. This will continue to be the case whether we leave the European Union with or without a deal.</p><p> </p><p>The Government also has well established ways of working with the food industry, including Defra’s long established Food Chain Emergency Liaison Group (FCELG), which allows Government and industry to work together to plan for and respond to any food supply disruption. This industry group’s membership is drawn from across the agri-food chain sector and includes other relevant government departments and Devolved Administrations including the Scottish Government. This group is meeting monthly to support preparations for leaving the EU.</p>

answer text <p>The Government is preparing for all eventualities including leaving the European Union without a deal. Extensive work to prepare for a ‘no deal’ scenario has been under way for the last two years to ensure the country continues to operate as smoothly as possible from the day we leave.</p><p>The UK has a high degree of food security, built on access to a range of sources including strong domestic production and imports from other countries. answer text <p>Defra ministers and officials meet stakeholders regularly to engage on the wide range of issues regarding air quality. I have hosted a number of roundtable discussions in preparing the draft Clean Air Strategy, meeting with a wide range of organisations representing public health interests, including the World Health Organisation (WHO), to discuss health impacts from particulate matter and how these could be reduced, and how we can improve the information provided about air pollution, forecasts and health impacts.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Officials continue regular engagement with a wide range of these organisations during and after the consultation on the draft Clean Air Strategy, and are pursuing a number of ideas for joint working on improving communications about health and pollution, including child health.</p><p> </p> more like this

answer text <p>This is a devolved matter.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Defra does not fund studies into the effect of air pollution on child health as this falls more in the remit of bodies such as the Department of Health and Social Care or Public Health England.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>We have consulted on our new Clean Air Strategy, which sets out how we are investing £10 million in improving our modelling, data and analytical tools to give a more precise picture of current and future air quality and the impact of policies to improve it in the future. We will continue to work in collaboration with research councils who are funding a large programme of research on air pollution.</p><p> </p> more like this

answer text <p>Recent Defra funded research into the use of cages for rearing gamebirds compared with more traditional pen systems found no difference in welfare between the two systems. The Government intends to review the statutory <em>Code of Practice for the Welfare of Gamebirds Reared for Sporting Purposes</em> next year. In the meantime, if anyone considers that the welfare of a gamebird is being compromised they should report it to the Animal &amp; Plant Health Agency who have powers to investigate such claims.</p> more like this
