Where a school closes the department and LocatED will always aim to recover assets and identify alternative educational uses for sites. If this is not possible, the department retains the option to sell the site for a commercial return.</p>

unstar this property answer text <p>​The statutory guidance sets out local authorities’ duty to make sure each child they look after has a health assessment of their physical, emotional and mental health needs. The health and care system is responsible for providing this assessment. Assessments should take into account the health conditions that may be more prevalent in looked-after children, including foetal alcohol syndrome.</p><p>As part of their inspection of local authority children’s services, Ofsted assesses the progress and experience of children in care, including whether their physical and mental health needs are being effectively identified and met.</p> more like this

unstar this property answer text <p>Tackling poverty will always be a priority for the government. We have lifted 400,000 people out of absolute poverty since 2010 and income inequality has fallen.</p><p>While schools alone cannot solve the challenges faced by many disadvantaged families at home, they can address barriers to learning when a child is at school. We support the provision of nutritious food in schools. This ensures pupils are well nourished, develop healthy eating habits and can concentrate and learn. The department provides free school meals support to 1.1 million of the most disadvantaged pupils. This saves families hundreds of pounds each year.</p><p>The pupil premium has provided school leaders with more than £15.6 billion since 2011 to focus on support for disadvantaged pupils. We expect to spend another £2.4 billion this year. School leaders are free to use this additional grant in any way they choose to benefit their pupils. We know that schools sometimes use the funding to help put their disadvantaged pupils in a receptive state of mind to learn by providing breakfast, items of school uniform, equipment, emotional support, and homework clubs. This enables every child to realise their potential.</p>

unstar this property answer text <p>The assessment made in relation to the risk to school staff who work with children with special educational needs should be undertaken by the headteacher of the education setting. Headteachers should refer to the guidance regarding the wider opening of schools as of 1 June, which can be found at the following link: <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/preparing-for-the-wider-opening-of-schools-from-1-june" target="_blank">https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/preparing-for-the-wider-opening-of-schools-from-1-june</a>.</p><p>We expect schools and trusts to work closely with parents, staff and unions, as they normally would, when agreeing the best approaches for their circumstances. We also expect schools and trusts to work with their local authorities to determine what services they require and to agree on any specific arrangements during this period.</p><p>To prevent the spread of COVID-19, education, childcare and children’s social care settings must use a range of protective measures to reduce the risk of transmission of infection. This includes making sure that pupils do not attend school if they, or a member of their household, experience symptoms. Other measures include promoting high standards of hand and respiratory hygiene, cleaning touched surfaces more frequently, minimising contact as much as possible and using personal protective equipment (PPE) where appropriate.</p><p>Where PPE is recommended, this means that a facemask should be worn if a distance of 2 metres cannot be maintained from someone with symptoms of COVID-19 and, if contact is necessary, then gloves, an apron and a facemask should be worn. If a risk assessment determines that there is a risk of fluids entering the eye from coughing, spitting or vomiting, for example, eye protection should also be worn.</p><p>The majority of staff in education, childcare and children’s social care settings will not require PPE beyond what they would normally need for their work, even if they are not always able to maintain distance of 2 metres from others. Additional PPE is only needed if a distance of 2 metres cannot be maintained from any child, young person or other learner displaying COVID-19 symptoms.</p><p>The department has worked with Public Health England to develop further guidance on safe working in education, childcare and children’s social care settings, including the use of PPE. unstar this property answer text <p>Schools and colleges continue to be best placed to make decisions about how to support and educate all their pupils during this period, based on the local context and staff capacity.</p><p>Where year groups are returning to school, we would expect school leaders and teachers to assess the stage pupils have reached in the school curriculum and the adjustments that may need to be made.</p><p>Schools should do all they can to support pupils attending school as well as those remaining at home, making use of the available remote education support such as Oak National Academy.</p><p>No school will be penalised if they are unable to offer a broad and balanced curriculum to their pupils during this period.</p><p>These are rapidly developing circumstances; we continue to keep the situation under review and will keep Parliament updated accordingly.</p> more like this
