answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 29/06/2017 answer text <p>The National Curriculum sets the expectation that all pupils should be taught to play a musical instrument. Maintained schools must follow the National Curriculum; academies have greater flexibility.</p><p>The Government is investing £300 million for music education hubs in 2016 to 2020 to ensure all pupils, whatever their background, have access to a high quality music education, including learning to play musical instruments and having the opportunity to play and sing in ensembles. Hubs are also expected to ensure that clear progression routes are available and affordable to all young people and to provide an instrument loan service, with discounts or free provision for those on low incomes.</p><p>The Department does not hold the data in the format requested. The table below shows the number of pupils in Key Stages 1 to 5 that participated in music lessons that were organised by music education hubs. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 29/06/2017 answer text <p>The Children and Social Work Act (2017) places a duty on the Secretary of State to make relationships education mandatory in all primary schools, and relationships and sex education mandatory in all secondary schools, in England.</p><p> </p><p>The Government also made a commitment to ensuring that the updated guidance and regulations for these subjects would be age appropriate and support the knowledge children and young people need to stay safe and to develop positive relationships.</p><p> </p><p>The Department intends to conduct a thorough and wide ranging engagement process on relationships education and relationships and sex education. This will determine the content of the regulations and statutory guidance, covering subject content, school practice and quality of delivery. We will ensure the subjects are carefully designed to safeguard and support pupils whilst being deliverable for schools.</p><p>Relationships education and relationships and sex education will be age appropriate, building knowledge over time in a way that prepares pupils for issues they will soon face.</p><p> </p><p>We will set out shortly more details about the engagement process and the work to consider age appropriate subject content. This will result in draft regulations and guidance on which we will consult. Members from across the House, including those who represent London constituencies, and have taken part in meetings with representatives from London Councils, and from London individual local authorities.</p><p>I also responded to a Westminster Hall Debate on School Funding in London in March, with contributions from hon. Regional School Commissioners (RSCs) and their teams work with trusts on a case by case basic to determine the best course of action, ensuring education for pupils in the first priority.</p><p>RSCs can commission a range of support to help MATs to improve – including from local system leaders such as Teaching Schools and National Leaders of Education.</p><p>If a trust is not making rapid enough improvements at a school the RSC may take formal action including issuing formal notices. Where academies are underperforming we act swiftly to address failure and secure improvement on a case by case basis.</p><p>The performance of UCAT is not at the standard we would expect. That is why we introduced a new duty to require governing bodies to make arrangements to support pupils with medical conditions and have provided statutory guidance outlining schools’ responsibilities in this area.</p><p>In meeting this duty, governing bodies should ensure that the arrangements in their school are clear and unambiguous about the need to actively support pupils with medical conditions to participate in school trips and visits, or in sporting activities, and not prevent them from doing so.</p><p>The guidance also makes clear that it is not generally acceptable practice to penalise children for their attendance record if their absences are related to their medical condition, such as hospital appointments.</p><p>We continue to work with Ofsted, and organisations such as the Health Conditions in Schools Alliance who have experience in supporting children with medical conditions, to help raise awareness of the duty.</p><p> </p> answering member constituency Scarborough and Whitby answering member printed Mr Robert Goodwill question first answered 27/06/2017 16:57:06 answering member 1562 label Biography information for Sir Robert Goodwill

This asked how we could harness the resources and expertise of those in our independent schools to work in partnership to lift attainment across the wider school system.</p><p>The Government has welcomed the way that our independent schools have actively considered and proposed what more they could do to raise attainment in state schools, in recognition of their responsibility to their own local communities.
