The Data Protection Act 2018 and the GDPR is in place to ensure that organisations, including the biggest advertising companies, who collect and use data do so lawfully and transparently. Organisations which fail to comply with the new legislation may be investigated by the Information Commissioner’s Office.</p><p> </p><p>The ICO is working with the advertising industry to improve compliance with the law. The ICO recently held a Fact Finding Forum, designed to better understand the key data protection issues around adtech and have published the following blogs in relation to this work. The music industry is one of the UK's greatest success stories, producing an extraordinary level of talent recognised and respected the world over. The UK's decision to leave the EU will not change that. Neither will it diminish our outstanding creativity.</p><p> </p><p>My department has held a series of roundtables with the creative sector on the impacts and opportunities affecting the creative industries as a result of the UK’s exit from the EU, including representatives from the music industry regarding touring musicians and crews and we continue to work closely with the sector at official level.</p><p> </p><p>We understand that outward mobility of creative talent is key to the success of the creative industries, especially for sub-sectors like music where touring is the life-blood of the industry, and we recognise the importance of temporary movement of goods and equipment for touring musicians.</p><p> </p><p>The phased introduction of the Facilitated Customs Arrangement (FCA) we have proposed in the White Paper on The Future Relationship between the United Kingdom and European Union would remove the need for customs checks and controls between the UK and the EU, as if they were a combined customs territory.</p><p> </p><p>The UK has made significant progress in the separation negotiations, including on intellectual property. In particular, we have agreed that any EU trade mark or Community design that is registered or published before the end of the implementation period will continue to be protected in the UK by a comparable right.</p><p> </p><p>The UK-level right will be granted automatically and without any charges or re-examination. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 29/11/2018 answer text <p>The UK Digital Strategy set out our commitment to enabling a more diverse digital workforce. As the digital revolution progresses, many more jobs will require digital skills and many more tech roles will be created, both in technology companies and in the general economy. We cannot afford for certain groups of people, including women and people from ethnic minority backgrounds, to be excluded from or unable to progress within these roles.</p><p> </p><p>While there is substantial progress that still needs to be made by technology companies to improve the gender and racial diversity of their staff, there are also significant industry-led initiatives aiming to solve the issue.</p><p> </p><p>Over 290 companies, from international tech giants right through to start-ups, SMEs and charities have already signed the Tech Talent Charter - an industry led initiative, supported by Government. The Charter gives organisations tangible actions and principles they can adopt to change their hiring and retention practices to become more gender-diverse and commits signatories to measuring the diversity profile of their UK employees and to share this data for (anonymous) collective publication in an annual report.</p><p> </p><p>There are also other industry-led programmes doing valuable and innovative work to help more women, ethnic minorities and other under-represented groups into tech, such as the #SheMeansBusiness initiative (by Facebook in collaboration with Enterprise Nation and FSB); the FDM Getting Back to Business programme; Fujitsu UK’s work on developing diverse role models within their workforce, and Backstage Capital, which is committed to investing in start-ups with diverse founders.</p><p> </p><p>We are also engaging with the work of organisations such as UK Black Tech and other organisations active in improving ethnic diversity in tech, and have recently convened an industry round table on inclusive technology in partnership with the Royal Academy of Engineers.</p><p> </p><p>Under new Government legislation over 10,000 employers reported their gender pay gaps this year. We are now working with employers to help them understand their gender pay gaps, and support them to put plans in place to tackle gaps. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 09/04/2019 answer text <p>Social media companies that process metadata that contains personal or identifying information about individuals in the UK must comply with the General Data Protection Regulation and the Data Protection Act 2018. The Privacy and Electronic Communication Regulations 2003 also imposes certain restrictions on the processing of metadata.</p><p>These rules impose strict obligations on organisations to process people’s data fairly and lawfully and to ensure that any data collected is held securely. Organisations must also ensure they have a legal basis for processing data, are clear and transparent about how personal data will be handled, and ensure that the data is processed in a way which individuals would expect. Organisations that fail to comply may be subject to enforcement action by the Information Commissioner’s Office.</p><p>The Government has also recently set up the Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation to provide independent and expert advice on the governance of data-driven technologies. One of the Centre’s first projects is to investigate how data is used to shape people’s online environments via the personalisation and targeting of messages, content and services. Questions about that investigation should be directed to the Information Commissioner's Office.</p><p> </p><p>The government's Data Protection Bill will strengthen data protection law and give the Information Commissioner tougher powers to ensure organisations comply. Digital is a fast evolving, innovative, sector that is driving economic transformation across the world. Digital sectors contributed £116.5 billion to the UK economy in 2016, representing 6.7% of GVA.
