answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 13/06/2019 answer text <p>The Government takes the issue of disinformation very seriously. DCMS is leading work across Government to tackle it. The recently published Online Harms White Paper sets out our expectations for tech companies to take proportionate and proactive measures to minimise the spread of misleading and harmful disinformation and the potential sanctions they will face if they do not. The Government is also working closely with industry, civil society and international partners to mitigate against the threat of online disinformation campaigns. For example, ahead of the European Parliament elections, DCMS led a cross-government effort to monitor for any disinformation campaigns so that we were ready to respond to them quickly and effectively.</p><p> </p><p>Cyber is a tier 1 threat and remains a national priority. This was made clear in The Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR) 2015 and reinforced by the National Cyber Security Strategy, published on 1 November 2016. The strategy sets out ambitious policies to protect the UK in cyber space, supported by a £1.9 billion transformational investment across ten years. Our vision for 2021 is that the UK is secure and resilient to cyber threats, prosperous and confident in the digital world.</p><p> </p><p>The implementation of the National Cyber Security Strategy led to the establishment of the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) in 2016. The NCSC is a world-leading cyber security capability, providing the UK with a unified platform to handle national cyber incidents, replacing an array of bodies with a single point of contact in Government for the private sector.</p><p> </p><p>The UK is also building a dedicated capability to counter-attack in cyber space as part of our full-spectrum capability. We have made it clear that all organisations, including the biggest social networking services who process vast amounts of personal data, must comply with the UK’s data protection laws.</p><p> </p><p>It is essential that people are confident their personal data will be protected and used in an appropriate way. The Data Protection Act 2018 and GDPR impose strict obligations on organisations to ensure that UK citizens’ data is processed safely and securely. The Huawei Cyber Security Evaluation Centre (HCSEC) was established in 2010 as part of a mitigation strategy.</p><p> </p><p>The Government has undertaken a thorough, evidence-based and hard-headed review of the 5G supply chain to ensure the secure and resilient roll-out of 5G. This goes far beyond individual vendors or individual countries. It imposed strict obligations on organisations to ensure that personal data is processed safely and securely. Organisations which fail to comply with the new legislation may be investigated by the Information Commissioner’s Office and subject to substantial fines.</p><p> </p><p>All organisations that process personal information must comply with data protection principles. One of these principles states that organisations shall be fair, lawful and transparent in the collection and use of personal data. That means all relevant organisations, including providers of artificial intelligence technology, must clearly explain and justify what they will be doing with personal information that they collect.</p><p> </p><p>The Government has also recently set up the Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation to identify and address any gaps in the data and AI governance landscape, as and when they emerge. This is why we have established the Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation, to provide independent, expert advice on the measures needed to enable and ensure safe, ethical and innovative uses of AI and data-driven technologies.</p><p>The principles set out in the EU guidelines are closely aligned with the UK’s own approach. We are also negotiating the proposed Tourism Sector Deal with the industry which aims to improve productivity. The House of Lords Select Committee recently reported on Regenerating Seaside Towns and we will be responding to any tourism related recommendations in due course.</p><p> </p><p>Our arms-length body VisitBritain (VB) also markets the UK internationally, using campaigns such as “I travel for…” and #MyMicroGap.
