answer text
Ofcom, the UK Regulator for Telecoms, oversees the General Conditions of Entitlement (GCEs), the rules under which Telecoms companies must operate in the UK. GC 9.6 provides consumer protection in the event of mid-contract variations. Under GC 9.6, providers must give customers notice of contract modifications (e.g. price rises) likely to cause ‘material detriment’ to them and the right to exit the contract without penalty in response. Ofcom published guidance at the start of this year clarifying these rules and further enabling competition in the market to deliver a choice of competitive tariffs for the consumer in the UK.
Major telecoms companies have also agreed to work with the Government and Ofcom on ways to improve transparency in contracts in line with the principles underpinning the Ofcom guidance. The Government and the Regulator will continue to work with the industry to promote further ways of ensuring that consumers have the best possible information to help them make informed choices about the communications services they purchase.

answer text
The Government has, to date, committed £780m of central funding to support improvements to broadband services for 95% of UK premises. The funding was allocated to local bodies who are responsible for setting priorities and delivering local broadband projects. Broadband Delivery UK supported local delivery teams by providing indicative broadband coverage data from its broadband model. The data model does not identify coastal areas separately from other areas, however information about broadband provision and speeds is publically available from Ofcom at http://maps.ofcom.org.uk/broadband/

Information about the BDUK projects, including coverage maps and post code checkers can be found at:https://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?msid=202405357373084260711.0004c0a24c8574593fb79&msa=0&dg=feature

answer text
Whilst we have no such plans in place I am pleased to note that Ofcom and the Information Commissioner’s Office published new consumer research on the effectiveness of the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) on 24 July 2014. This independent research showed that registering with the TPS reduced all types nuisance calls, including live sales calls, recorded messages and silent and abandoned calls by around a third. The full Ofcom report can be accessed at: http://stakeholders.ofcom.org.uk/market-data-research/other/telecoms-research/tps-effectiveness/

As noted in our Nuisance Calls Action Plan of March this year we are keen to improve the enforcement of the existing regulations as we believe this will further increase the effectiveness of the TPS.

more like this
