answer text
As a result of the government's Superfast Broadband Programme and roll-out by the private sector, superfast broadband with speeds of more than 24Mbps is now available to more than 92% of homes and businesses in the UK and the government expects this to reach 95% by the end of 2017. This coverage includes rural areas. The delivery programme in Scotland including the Gordon constituency is delivered by the Scottish Government.

Thinkbroadband estimate that current coverage of superfast broadband in the Gordon constituency is 79%, which DCMS estimate will rise to 83% by the end of 2017. This compares to a UK average of over 92%. The Scottish Government is responsible for delivering broadband in Scotland.

Take up in the Rest of Scotland Project area is 28% and as a result of the UK Government's contract management, further funding can be returned to the Scottish Government for reinvestment in more superfast coverage as take-up rises. It would be for the Scottish Government to decide where funding returned by suppliers under the contracts is allocated to increase coverage.

answer text
The money returned to projects by efficiency savings and gain-share will be invested using the same criteria set out for the earlier phases of superfast rollout. This means it will focus on areas where there is not commercial competition, and prioritised by value-for-money installations to connect the largest number of premises who do not receive superfast speeds. Urban areas have generally been excluded from Superfast Programmes as commercial competition already exists in these locations.
more like this

answer text
95% of UK premises are expected to be covered by superfast broadband by December 2017. The 95% figure is a UK average and individual areas, including rural parts of Northern Ireland and other areas of the UK, will have different coverage levels. All premises which do not have a speed of at least 10Mbps will be able to request an upgrade to at least this speed under the Universal Service Obligation. Furthermore providers and local bodies will also be able to access funding for full fibre connectivity as announced at the Autumn Statement 2016, once those proposals have been finalised in early 2017.
more like this

answer text
The Government is making a significant contribution to broadband provision across the UK, and the superfast broadband projects that are under way in the devolved nations will deliver superfast coverage to nearly 700,000 premises in Scotland, 650,000 in Wales and 40,000 in Northern Ireland. These form an important part of achieving 95% superfast coverage across the UK by December 2017. The project in Northern Ireland adds to the previous roll-out.

These projects will also benefit from clawback funding from suppliers as a result of take-up going above the initial expected levels, which will be available for reinvestment in additional superfast broadband coverage. New procurements are under way in each of the nations using this funding which will further increase superfast coverage.

In addition the government is introducing a Universal Service Obligation in the Digital Economy Bill, which will give the right to consumers to request a broadband service; our aim is currently to set this at 10Mbps.
