answer text <p>The Government is committed to ensuring that everyone with the potential has the opportunity to benefit from higher education, irrespective of their background or gender.</p><p>In the last academic year we saw record numbers of applicants and entrants to higher education, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds.</p><p>In our recent guidance to the Director of Fair Access, we asked him to include among his areas of focus support for white working class boys who are among the groups with the lowest participation rates. Universities expect to spend more than £745 million through access agreements agreed with the Director of Fair Access on measures to improve access and success for students from disadvantaged backgrounds - up significantly from £404 million in 2009.</p> more like this

answer text We continue to work closely with the aerospace industry in Northern Ireland through the UK wide Aerospace Growth Partnership to tackle barriers to growth, boost exports and grow high value jobs. This work is integral to the Northern Ireland growth implementation strategy 'Partnering for Growth' led by Invest Northern Ireland and supported by the industry body ADS. It includes action to support industry in innovation and technology development, strengthening the competitiveness and manufacturing capability of suppliers and raising skills levels<p /><p /> <br /> The steps taken to back this work include a £1.95 billion commitment by the Government, over 13 years to 2026, for new aerospace research and development projects supported by the Aerospace Technology Institute<p /><p><br> My Department and the Northern Ireland Executive are also investing a total of almost £135 million in the development of the C Series aircraft supporting hundreds of jobs in Belfast at Bombardier Aerostructures and Engineering Services and its UK supply chain.</p><p> </p>

answer text <p>The General Product Safety Regulations 2005 requires all products that are placed onto the UK market whether bought on-line or in a shop to be safe.</p><p>The sale and use of laser pointers is an issue that cuts across a number of government departments. Following a cross-Whitehall meeting on 25 February, chaired by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, the Government has drawn up a plan to tackle these issues to ensure the safety of consumers and the wider public.</p><p>The Government is looking at a range of options which may include legislative for controlling the sales, use and possession of laser pens.</p> more like this

answer text <p>In the last five years, Innovate UK has committed around £32M to support partnerships between pharmaceutical companies and universities in order to drive the translation of university-based research and commercial applications which tackle disease and life-threatening illnesses.</p><p>In addition, the Government is investing in three Catapult Centres supporting the life sciences sector – the Cell Therapy, Precision Medicine and Medicines Technologies Catapults. These centres have a particular focus on supporting collaborative research and innovation among small and medium sized firms.</p><p>Large companies are able to claim R&amp;D Tax Relief through a 130% enhanced allowance or, alternatively, an 11% taxable credit via the R&amp;D Expenditure Credit. In 2013/14, these schemes provided support of £950M to 3,950 businesses. Additionally, the UK’s Patent Box was introduced in 2013 and gives additional incentive to develop, retain and commercialise new, innovative patented products in the UK. The Patent Box offers an effective 10% corporation tax rate on trading profits earned in the UK from specified patents.</p>

answer text <p>My Department funds medical research in universities via the Medical Research Council (MRC). The MRC supports and encourages collaboration between UK universities across all of its funding programmes, and also supports collaboration through targeted initiatives such as:</p><ul><li>The Farr Institute, which is jointly funded by the MRC, Government and research charities and brings together 19 university partners to create a UK-wide platform for health informatics research. The Institute provides the physical and electronic infrastructure to facilitate collaboration across the partner universities, and support their safe use of patient and research data for medical research.</li><li>MRC support for 13 stratified medicine research consortia, addressing conditions such as arthritis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, schizophrenia and dementia. The initiative involves 32 UK universities, with each consortia involving around 7 universities.</li></ul><p> </p><p>Working together, the Research Councils have developed an RCUK framework for principles in funding multi-institutional collaborations in research.
