answer text <p>The National Fund was set up by a trust deed in 1928. The Fund is held on trust for the purpose of reducing the National Debt. According to expert evidence, there is no realistic prospect of the Fund ever amounting to a sum sufficient to pay off the whole of the National Debt. On 22<sup>nd</sup> May 2018 the former Attorney General made an application to the High Court to vary the terms of the charitable trust.</p><p>While we expect the substantive hearing to take place in 2019, we have not yet received a hearing date from the High Court.</p> more like this

answer text <p>As pro bono champions in Government, the Attorney General and I attended events during Justice Week to encourage and support the excellent work being done by the pro bono community. We also chair the Pro Bono Committee that helps to promote and coordinate the work already being done by pro bono lawyers.</p><p>From personal experience I know that pro bono work not only brings a sense of responsibility but also a tremendous sense of achievement and pride in what can be accomplished. Over the last year I have been immensely proud what has been achieved through the dedication of the all those involved in pro bono work and I am consistently struck by the commitment shown.</p> more like this

answer text <p>Teaching people about their legal rights and responsibilities, together with helping them gain the confidence and skills to get access to justice can really make a difference to people’s lives – as well as our legal system. To further this work, the Government is working closely with partners across the PLE community, including representitives from the Citizenship Foundation, The Law Society, Bar Council, Magistrates’ Association, and Citizens Advice, among others.</p><p>On 31 October, as part of Justice Week, we launched the new vision statement for Public Legal Education. The statement creates a shared vision, which will help drive forward legal education initiatives. The statement reveals seven goals for where PLE might be in 10 years’ time.</p> more like this

answer text <p>The Attorney and I welcome Max Hill QC to his new position as Director of Public Prosecutions. As the sponsoring minister, the Attorney will continue to meet the DPP regularly to discuss performance.</p><p> </p><p>The CPS has undertaken extensive work over the last decade to ensure that specialist prosecutors are fully equipped to deal with the particular complexities of rape and serious sexual offences and the Code for Crown Prosecutors is properly applied. This includes understanding victim vulnerabilities and the impact of rape, as well as consent, myths and stereotypes, and the challenges of cases involving vulnerable witnesses and young people.</p><p> </p><p>To address the increasing complexity of cases featuring large volumes of digital material the CPS have introduced new guidance to help police and prosecutors with reasonable lines of enquiry and communications evidence. The National Disclosure Improvement Plan sets out further measures to make sustainable changes to the way in which disclosure duties are exercised.</p><p> </p>
