By switching from a standard tariff to the best fixed, direct debit deal on the market, many people could save around £300 and some could save even more. At the last Autumn Statement, the government also set out action to reduce the projected impact of policies on average household energy bills by around £30 a year from 2017.</p><p> </p><p>The Department intends to publish, in due course, an update on the projected costs of policies funded through supplier levies and obligations that impact consumer energy bills. These powers enabled the Government to make changes to supplier standard licence conditions to ensure that customers are on the cheapest tariff that is in line with their preferences. However as the necessary changes to supplier licence conditions were introduced by Ofgem in 2013, the Government has not had to exercise these powers.</p><p> </p><p>Ofgem has since referred the GB energy market to the Competition and Markets Authority for a full market investigation which is due to conclude in June 2016 following the publication of the Provisional Decision on Remedies on 10 March. This is a good start, but the Government expects all suppliers to pass on reductions in the costs of supplying energy to consumers. I have met all the major energy suppliers in recent months to make that point clear.</p><p> </p><p>The Competition and Markets Authority are nearing the end of their enquiry into the energy markets, and I look forward to their conclusions. For example, direct help is given to vulnerable consumers through energy efficiency schemes such as the Energy Company Obligation and through the Warm Home Discount scheme, where 2 million low income and vulnerable households per year receive rebates off their electricity bills. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 18/01/2016 answer text <p>The government expects suppliers to pass through to consumers any reductions in the costs of supplying energy.</p><br /><p>Strong competition is key to ensuring that prices are kept as low as possible and reductions in the costs of supplying energy are passed through to consumers. There are now 34 companies supplying gas and electricity to households, compared to 13 in 2010.</p><br /><p>The Government has worked with the industry to cut the time it takes to switch from 5 weeks to 17 days. We are now working with Ofgem to deliver reliable next day switching by 2018.</p><br /><p>Smart meters will make the energy market more accessible, and energy consumers will feel more in control. This increased engagement will drive a more vibrant and competitive market.</p><br /><p>Ofgem has referred the energy markets to the Competition and Markets Authority for investigation.
