answer text <p>Funding per pupil in cash terms from 1996/97 to 2018/19 and total schools funding from 2001/02 to 2018/19 are set out in the attached tables. Before 2001 schools funding was included within the local government funding settlement. For this reason, the total funding prior to 2001 is not readily available. Before 2018/19 funding was not allocated separately for primary and secondary phases.</p><p> </p><p>The Government publishes Gross Domestic Product (GDP) deflators that can be used to understand the impact of inflation over time. These are available at: <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/gdp-deflators-at-market-prices-and-money-gdp-october-2018-budget-2018" target="_blank">https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/gdp-deflators-at-market-prices-and-money-gdp-october-2018-budget-2018</a>.</p><p> </p><p>Analysis by the Institute for Fiscal Studies has shown that per pupil spending in schools in 2020 is set to be at least 70% higher in real terms than it was in 1990: <a href="https://www.ifs.org.uk/uploads/publications/comms/R150.pdf" target="_blank">https://www.ifs.org.uk/uploads/publications/comms/R150.pdf</a>.</p>
