answer text <p>On Friday 14 September, the Office for Students (OfS) published its guidance to Higher Education providers on the student electoral registration condition.This guidance is the final step in the implementation of the student electoral registration regulatory condition provided for in the Higher Education and Research Act 2017.</p><p> </p><p>The OfS guidance represents the first time that student electoral registration forms part of the Higher Education framework in England. In fulfilling the condition, Higher Education providers across England will be obliged to work with Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) to facilitate electoral registration amongst their student populations. The condition also reinforces an existing legal requirement for Higher Education providers to comply with ERO requests for information, necessary for maintaining complete and accurate electoral registers.</p> more like this

answer text <p>The Government issued Ministerial Guidance to the Office for Students (OfS) in February 2018, relating to an electoral registration condition for Higher Education providers registering with the OfS. The OfS is currently engaging with stakeholders for the purposes of producing its own guidance to advise Higher Education providers on the steps they might take to demonstrate that they are complying with this condition of registration.</p><p> </p><p>We expect this action to help facilitate student registration, improving both the completeness and accuracy of electoral registers. We intend to evaluate the effect of these arrangements before considering any extension into the schools and Further Education sectors.</p> more like this

We intend to publish the outcomes of this project in due course. While we do not support mandating universities to implement the system we intend to encourage wider take up, on a voluntary basis, by universities and colleges with the appetite and technical infrastructure to adopt the model. We also intend to gather evidence on the extent to which universities have integrated or plan to integrate electoral registration with student enrolment.</p><p>I have discussed this issue with the Minister of State for Universities, Science, Research and Innovation and we will continue to work together to provide support to improve student electoral registration.</p> more like this
