answer text
Part of the scope of the Sheffield to Rotherham tram train pilot project is the production of a suite of information on the lessons learned during both the design and delivery phases of the project. This information will be published for the benefit of interested parties. The project team is also available to provide advice and have supplied information to a number of cities in the United Kingdom.

I understand that the tram train project team have been in contact with the Glasgow Airport Access Project team since autumn 2015 and have shared learning and experience relevant to the early development of that scheme. This has included information on vehicle characteristics and operational interfaces. The Glasgow team have also visited Sheffield to gain direct experience of the tram train vehicles.
more like this

answer text
Our current assumption is that up to two high speed trains an hour, to and from London, would be able to serve Sheffield station without the need for extra capacity, if the proposals on which we are currently consulting for the HS2 route in South Yorkshire are confirmed. We are also investigating routing up to two further HS2 services from Birmingham to Leeds through Sheffield. This would require an additional northern junction which is also covered in the current consultation.
more like this

answer text
New powers to improve the provision of electric vehicle infrastructure have been proposed for inclusion in the forthcoming Modern Transport Bill. These proposals include a power to regulate technical standards of infrastructure to ensure easy compatability with vehicles, and a power to require clear and consistent pricing information. A public consultation closed on 24 November.

At the Autumn Statement, the Chancellor announced additional funding of £270m for ultra low emission vehicles – with £80m for charging infrastructure - in addition to existing funding of more than £600m over thisParliament. Grant funding for chargepoints will continue to require that all public chargepoints have standards that enable them to work with all types of electric vehicle. In addition, the EU Directive (2014/94/EU) on the deployment of alternative fuels infrastructure will facilitate the standardised provision of connectors for chargepoints across Europe and is currently being transposed into UK law.

This is due to problems with Network Rail’s complex programme of works to modify the heavy rail network in order to allow the operation of the innovative tram train vehicles. The final outcome of this review work is still being considered. However, Network Rail has indicated that their work is now scheduled to be complete during summer 2018.

The commencement of passenger services on this route would follow the successful testing of the infrastructure, operational arrangements and appropriate driver and staff training. The general presumption is that research results used in the course of the Department’s business should be made available to broaden knowledge and better inform discussion. In a few circumstances (for instance, where the research relates to security matters or where the Department does not hold the necessary rights to publish) such information is not published; but such circumstances are exceptional.
