The Department monitors each train operator’s overall performance against these levels, and this includes regular meetings with their senior management where performance figures are scrutinised and challenged. answer text <p>a) The Great Western Intercity Express Programme trains have a different acceleration profile to the High Speed Trains they are replacing. Their performance means they are able to deliver the current timetable and associated journey times and once the planned upgrade programme is complete and the full fleet is in service, are expected to deliver a new timetable with significant passenger benefits including improved frequencies and reduced journey times.</p><p> </p><p>b) The Class 319s can run at 100mph in electric mode and are designed to have very similar diesel acceleration to the 75mph units they will replace.</p> more like this

answer text <p>Rolling Stock is procured through a competitive process to achieve best value for money. The Government has been clear that bi-modes are likely to be more expensive than electric only trains, but do provide valuable flexibility. New diesels deliver an overall better environmental performance than existing diesel trains because they are subject to the latest emission standards but also offer the flexibility to operate in electric mode where there are electric wires.</p> more like this
