The staff will no longer be civil servants, although terms and conditions will be protected for existing staff. It is the role of the Department for International Development to work with such bodies. The airline that had proposed operating direct services, Gambia Bird Airlines, were invited to make representations to the Department for Transport and these are currently under consideration. The industry is free to consider initiatives which meet the overall requirements of the Department for Transport's specification. This may include providing additional seating capacity in standard class carriages through conversion of first class carriages.
