answer text <p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The criteria for determining when Disabled Student Allowances (DSAs) will contribute to the cost of higher specification or higher cost computers will be set out in guidance that will be published alongside the appropriate regulations in the autumn. Support under DSAs will continue to be available if the need for a higher specification or higher cost computer is by virtue of the student's disability, rather than how the course is being delivered by the Higher Education Institution (HEI). If access to a higher specification or higher cost computer is essential to all students on that course, regardless of whether they are disabled or not, then provision of such computers would be a matter for the HEI.</p><p> </p> more like this

answer text <p> </p><p>Disabled students will continue to receive support through a combination of disabled students' allowances (DSAs) and reasonable adjustments made by Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). Each student's needs are unique. Some will receive more support through reasonable adjustments than previously experienced. Written guidance will be available.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>It is not possible to make an accurate estimate of how many prospective students will no longer be eligible for DSAs as many students receive more than one type of support.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Current DSA recipients and disabled students applying for DSAs in 2014/15 will not be affected by these changes in 2015/16.</p><p> </p><p><strong> </strong></p><p> </p> more like this

The changes should improve the effectiveness of the scheme, and ensure that there is a proper balance between the responsibility of Higher Education Institutions to make reasonable adjustments and a central scheme, the DSA, that provides funding direct to students. answer text <p> </p><p>Higher education Institutions already have a duty to make reasonable adjustments for disabled students under the Equality Act 2010. The recently announced changes consider how the balance of responsibility between reasonable adjustments and support provided through Disabled Students Allowances (DSAs) should change. DSAs will remain available for students to complement the reasonable adjustments provided by the institution.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The Government also provides annual funding to Higher Education Institutions through the teaching grant. The Student Opportunity Fund is part of the overall Teaching Grant allocated to Higher Education Institutions by HEFCE. This funding element to support disabled students rose to £15 million for 2013/14, an increase of £2 million on the previous year and has been maintained for 2014/15. There are no plans to transfer additional funds.</p><p> </p> more like this
