Issue specific guidance on minimising the potential impacts of offshore wind farms on marine life is available from the relevant statutory nature conservation bodies [Natural England, Natural Resources Wales and the Joint Nature Conservation Committee] throughout the planning and development cycles of an offshore wind farm. The potential impacts of proposed projects on marine life and on other relevant issues will be considered in a public examination of any development consent application that is made.
more like this

answer text
The Department for Health and Social Care funds health research through the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR). NIHR funds ‘needs-led’ applied research – it aims to address issues that matter to the NHS and public health by identifying gaps in knowledge, and funding research that provides high-quality evidence to fill such gaps.

In order to achieve this, NIHR undertakes activities to identify needs, working closely with users of research evidence – those responsible for establishing policy, commissioning services and delivering care.

The NIHR Research for Patient Benefit (RfPB) Programme funds regionally derived applied research projects in health services and social care. The main purpose of the programme is to realise, through evidence, the huge potential for improving, expanding and strengthening the way that healthcare is delivered for patients, the public and the NHS through locally generated priorities.

In deciding which projects to support, we take care to involve not only scientific reviewers and experienced researchers, but also practitioners and service users. We also appoint public members to our Regional Advisory Panels.

UK Research and Innovation, a partner organisation of BEIS, funds medical research primarily through the Medical Research Council (MRC). MRC welcomes funding applications for research into any aspect of human health and is committed to funding excellence. MRC recognises the value of information such as local health profiles for identifying future research areas, but there is the need to balance this against wider opportunities and allow for investigator-led proposals to inform our priorities too.

answer text
The Government has made a commitment to increase overall investment in R&D to 2.4% of GDP by 2027, which would be the highest recorded level, and 3% in the longer-term. As part of this, UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) funds research into animal feed and agriculture more widely. However funding is not generally ringfenced for specific research areas and is decided based on the quality of the application.

Innovate UK, now part of UKRI, has provided investment to the Centre for Innovation Excellence in Livestock (CIEL) to cover the start-up costs required to bring together a research base of 12 leading UK academic institutions and over 45 industry partners. The Centre will meet its wider costs through funding obtained from competitively won collaborative research and development grants and industrial partner membership fees.

CIEL has helped to co-fund the development of new research facilities such as the £9.4 million CIEL Spen farm at the University of Leeds to provide a new indoor facility to carry out pig nutrition, behaviour, welfare and production system research and deliver feed recommendations to keep pace with ongoing genetic improvements.

CIEL is one of four Agri-Tech centres that were funded as part of the Agri-Tech Strategy that was launched in 2013 as part of a £160 million commitment to UK Agriculture .

answer text
The UK space sector is one of the fastest growing areas of the UK economy and, as a world leader in satellite and secure software technology, the UK space industry creates high-skilled jobs across the UK.

As the recently published ‘Size and Health of the UK Space Industry’ report highlights, the UK space sector is worth an estimated £14.8 billion. It employs 41,900 people and contributes £5.7 billion to UK GDP. Income dependent on EU space programmes represents a relatively small proportion (2.5%) of the total income for the sector. As the UK’s withdraws from the European Union (EU), it is important that the UK continues to champion the sector, including supporting opportunities for exports and strengthening the UK’s active role in the European Space Agency (ESA). ESA is a non-EU intergovernmental organisation and is a world leader in the exploration of space.

The UK has the skills, expertise and commitment to deliver future National space programmes, including a possible UK GNSS, and this programme represents a significant opportunity for the UK in line with the Government’s modern Industrial Strategy. This will help to ensure important skills and knowledge are retained within the UK and that the UK’s successful space sector continues to thrive.
