answer text <p>The Retail Sector Council meets approximately three times a year. They first met in March, then June and November of 2018. Their next meeting is scheduled for February.</p><p> </p><p>The UK retail sector is one of the largest employers in the country, with a workforce of over three million and accounting for around 5.1% of economic output with sales of nearly £360 billion in 2017.</p><p> </p><p>The latest ONS retail briefing shows that for the whole of 2018, retail sales in terms of quantity bought increased by 2.7% and Total Retail sales in 2018 increased to £368bn in 2018, an increase of 3%, but we and the Council recognise that the sector faces some key challenges.</p><p> </p><p>The Council is prioritising its work to address the key challenges facing the sector and will initially focus on; costs to business, skills and lifelong learning, employment protection, consumer protection, the circular economy and the Industrial Strategy. The priority areas were selected by the industry and each workstream will be led by a senior industry figure.</p>

answer text <p>The Retail Sector Council held its first meeting in March this year, and its second meeting on 25<sup>th</sup> June.</p><p> </p><p>The Council is industry led and brings Government and industry together to boost the sector’s productivity and economic health. There are a range of retailers and retail associations on the Council, and all types of retail activity in the UK are in scope.</p> more like this

answer text <p>The first meeting of the Retail Sector Council was held on the 22<sup>nd</sup> March 2018, with the second meeting due to be held on the 25<sup>th</sup> June 2018.</p><p> </p><p>The following members attended the March meeting: Amazon, Asos, Association of Convenience Stores, Boots, British Retail Consortium, GFirst LEP, Keelham Farm Shop, and the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers (USDAW). I co-chaired the meeting with Richard Pennycook, Chairman of Fenwick, The Hut Group and Howden Joinery Group. Senior officials from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy were also in attendance.</p><p> </p><p>A full list of members can be found here: <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/news/industry-led-retail-sector-council-launched-to-act-as-champion-for-future-growth" target="_blank">https://www.gov.uk/government/news/industry-led-retail-sector-council-launched-to-act-as-champion-for-future-growth</a></p><p> </p><p>The Council are currently in the process of establishing a website which will contain a summary of each Retail Sector Council meeting.</p>
