answer text <p>The Domestic Gas &amp; Electricity (Tariff Cap) Act places a duty on Ofgem to set a temporary price cap on standard variable and default tariffs.</p><p> </p><p>On 6th September 2018, Ofgem published a statutory consultation, in which they propose a methodology for setting the cap level which takes account of supplier costs including for the wholesale cost of energy. Ofgem propose setting the initial level of the cap at £1,136 and will update the cap on a regular basis to reflect changes in costs, including wholesale energy prices.</p> more like this

answer text <p>BEIS Ministers and officials meet energy companies to discuss a range of issues.</p><p> </p><p>Ofgem rules require energy suppliers to engage with their customers when they become aware they may be in payment difficulty and offer the opportunity to repay money owed through a repayment plan.</p><p> </p><p>Energy suppliers can ultimately disconnect customers who fail to agree, or stick to an agreed repayment plan. Alternatives to disconnection include recovery of debt directly from certain benefits or the installation of prepayment meter, either by agreement or under a warrant to recover the money owed, but only where it is safe and reasonably practicable to do so.</p><p> </p><p>Vulnerable customers, eligible for the Priority Services Register, cannot be disconnected during the winter months (1 October- 31 March) and many suppliers have signed a ‘safety net’, a pledge to never knowingly disconnect a vulnerable customer at any time of year.</p><p> </p><p>Suppliers should signpost vulnerable customers in debt to impartial advice and specialist support services, such as the Extra Help Unit, run by Citizens Advice.</p>

answer text <p>Of the roughly 1.4m Pension Credit Guaranteed Credit recipients, over 1.2m receive the Warm Home Discount (WHD) automatically on their energy bills as a result of being with a participating supplier and being named on the energy bill. Some of these pensioners are with suppliers with less than 250,000 customers but who have opted to participate in WHD voluntarily. We estimate that roughly 60,000 pension credit guarantee credit recipients who would be eligible under the scheme do not receive the rebate as a result of being with a non-participating supplier</p><p> </p> more like this

answer text <p>The independent regulator, Ofgem’s has robust powers to investigate and compel redress when energy companies breach competition and consumer protection law, and their supply licence conditions.</p><p> </p><p>Ofgem can impose financial penalties of up to 10 per cent of a licensee’s turnover for breaches of licence conditions and competition law, and apply to the courts for an order to stop breaches of consumer legislation. In addition, they can also require compensation for consumers adversely affected by regulatory breaches.</p><p> </p><p>Consumers who believe they have been overcharged should raise the matter with their energy supplier and if they do not receive a satisfactory response, they can take the matter to the Ombudsman Service: Energy. The Ombudsman has powers to require a supply company to make a financial award to a consumer of up to £10,000.</p><p> </p> more like this

answer text <p>As of 31<sup>st</sup> December 2016, in Great Britain, there were 4.4 million domestic time of use (Economy 7 type meters). Of these, BEIS estimate that there were around 3.1 million domestic customers on Economy 7 or 10 tariffs.</p><p> </p><p>While a number of suppliers are offering time of use and other innovative tariffs enabled by smart metering and elective half-hourly settlement, we do not have information on the number of domestic customers on these types of tariffs.</p><p> </p><p>As of 31<sup>st</sup> December 2016, in Great Britain, there were around 500,000 non-domestic profile 4 Economy 7 type meters (used by small non-domestic customers).
