Discussions on Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station are still live, and costs associated with these contracts are confidential while negotiations are ongoing. The impact on consumers’ energy bills is expected to be minimal.</p><p> </p><p>Generation units subject to the contracts will only be dispatched if required by the System Operator to manage exceptional energy security risks. The Government is confident that the Capacity Market will ensure there is sufficient capacity to offset the retirement of the remaining coal plants. The most recent Capacity Market auctions have already secured the majority of Great Britain’s capacity needs out to 2024/25.</p><p> </p><p>National Grid Electricity System Operator has the ability to manage electricity supply and demand, including at times of low wind generation. Hon. Friend the Prime Minister announced the Government’s intention to consult on bringing forward the coal closure date to 1 October 2024. A closure in 2024 would mean that in 10 years we have reduced our reliance on unabated coal generation from around a third of our electricity supply to zero. We have seen regular periods of zero coal generation since summer 2016. Between 1 May and 8 May 2019, Great Britain went a week without coal-fired electricity generation for the first time since the Industrial Revolution.
