answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 24/03/2020 answer text <p>The Prime Minister appointed separate Secretaries of State for the Foreign Office and DFID in the recent reshuffle.</p><p>The Integrated Review will be a wholesale reassessment of the UK’s foreign, defence, security and development policy. DFID is closely involved in the Review’s work. We are clear that tackling global poverty is in the UK’s interest and is the right thing to do.</p><p>A range of departments across Whitehall undertake ODA programming, with DFID support and guidance, but most UK ODA is still spent by DFID. All UK ODA is spent in accordance with the rules set by the OECD DAC and the UK’s International Development Act 2002. As outlined in the Conservative manifesto, this Government will continue to be a champion of the rules-based international system. Where the UK has considered the international aid rules to be outdated, we have led the way in working with others to push for reforms. On average UNRWA spends 58% of this budget on education enabling UNRWA to educate more than 533,000 children, half of whom are girls. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 20/03/2020 answer text <p>The UK is at the forefront of supporting the science-led approach to tackling COVID-19 around the world and has invested £65 million so far into COVID-19 research. This includes investment in research and development of a possible vaccine, as well as more immediate gains such as rapid diagnostics and therapeutics.</p><p>An effective vaccine will be vital to the long-term control of the outbreak. To date the UK has invested £40 million to the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), specifically for COVID-19 vaccine development, alongside our existing support to their research. DFID will work with CEPI and others to ensure that any vaccine candidates are affordable and accessible to developing countries.</p><p>We have also made available up to £150 million to the International Monetary Fund to help developing countries meet their debt repayments so that they can focus their available resources on tackling coronavirus. This will enable developing countries to direct greater resources to their healthcare efforts, helping prevent the virus from spreading around the world.</p><p>Our response builds on the UK’s longstanding record of supporting countries across the globe to prepare for large disease outbreaks. This includes being the largest donor to Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. Between 2016 and 2020, DFID provided £1.44 billion of support to GAVI. This includes the UK committing up to £241 million of UK Aid to support the global efforts to combat the outbreak of COVID-19. As part of this, the UK is providing £10 million to the World Health Organisation’s (WHO’s) Emergency Flash Appeal.</p><p>DFID recognises that older people around the world may be vulnerable to acquiring diseases such as COVID-19 and strong health systems are vital to ensuring health security. The UK works to strengthen health systems through our work in-country, as well as through our support to WHO and other global health initiatives. UK aid will reduce the risk of the spread of the disease by supporting developing countries most at risk of coronavirus to quickly identify cases and care for patients. This support demonstrates how UK aid is making the world a safer place by tackling diseases that do not respect borders.</p><p>The UK has committed up to £241 million of aid to support the global efforts to combat the outbreak of COVID-19. In addition to the UK’s significant annual funding to the World Health Organization (WHO) of around £120 million, the UK has committed an additional £10 million to the WHO’s Emergency Flash Appeal and additional funding for other international partners who are helping developing countries develop and deliver their own response to the virus. This includes funding for research and development of vaccines, diagnostics and treatments, medical and humanitarian expertise and supplies and a package of support to help developing countries respond to the economic impacts of the virus.</p><p>By reducing the global impact of the virus and preventing its spread, this support is firmly in the UK national interest, protecting both the UK public and the stability of the UK economy.</p><p>UK aid has a longstanding record of supporting countries across the globe to prepare for large disease outbreaks. We are working closely with our international partners, including the WHO, to support vulnerable countries ensuring they are better prepared.
