answer text <p>The Department of Health is collaborating with a number of Government Departments, Agencies and non-governmental organisation partners to provide support and screening to health service volunteers assisting with the Ebola crisis in West Africa. This work is being managed by the Department for International Development in conjunction with UK Med.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>UK Med run the <em>UK International Emergency Medical</em>, of UK surgeons, anaesthetists, emergency physicians/nurses and other supporting medical, nursing and paramedical staff. They ensure that those who volunteer for this programme of work are appropriately trained, prepared and accountable.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The programme comprises a robust selection process, pre-deployment preparations and occupational health and psychological screening, training in the United Kingdom with further training and mentoring in Sierra Leone, and advice and support from Public Health England on monitoring health on return.</p><p> </p>

However this does not include a full picture of the number of children diagnosed with diabetes.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>It is worth noting that around 97% of children with diabetes have Type 1, which is unrelated to lifestyle factors.</p><p> </p> more like this

answer text <p>The Quality and Outcomes Framework has been collating data on the number of adults aged 17 years and older who have been diagnosed with diabetes and are on general practice diabetes registers. In 2005 there were 1,766,391 adults aged 17 years and older with diagnosed diabetes on general practice registers. In 2013 this number was 2,703,044.</p><p> </p> more like this

answer text <p>The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Health Technology Assessment (HTA) programme is funding a systematic review of evidence on the benefits, harms and costs of treatments for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.</p><p> </p><p>The researchers have sent the report of the review to the NIHR Evaluation, Trials and Studies Coordinating Centre, based at the University of Southampton, which manages the HTA programme on behalf of the Department. The report is expected to be published in the journal <em>Health Technology Assessment</em> in January 2015.</p><p> </p> more like this

answer text <p>On 22 May 2014, the European Medicines Agency's Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) recommended granting a conditional marketing authorisation for Translarna (ataluren), an orphan designated medicine for the treatment of Duchenne muscular dystrophy caused by nonsense mutations. Translarna is to be used in patients aged five years and older who are able to walk.</p><p>The CHMP opinion on Translarna will now be sent to the European Commission for adoption of a decision on an European Union-wide marketing authorisation.</p><p>Other products are currently in various stages of development.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p> more like this

answer text <p>The NHS Health Check programme is a risk assessment and management programme aimed at preventing a range of illnesses, including diabetes. Economic modelling has shown that potentially it can prevent more than 4,000 people a year from developing diabetes.</p><p> </p><p>Public Health England is supporting local authorities to deliver the NHS Health Check programme. Take up continues to improve with the number of checks being undertaken up by 13% compared to the same period last year.</p><p> </p><p>Strategic Clinical Networks (SCNs) focus on priority service areas to help improve the quality and equity of care and outcomes by bringing together those who use, provide and commission services in the area they serve. There are 12 Cardiovascular Disease Strategic Clinical Networks, 10 of which have dedicated diabetes clinical leads, and they support the prevention of Type 2 diabetes, and identify and share good practice within their areas. Diabetes UK is supporting meetings between the NHS England National Clinical Director for Obesity and Diabetes, and the diabetes clinical leads and associate directors of the SCNs to help ensure that best practice is shared across all 12 regional networks.</p>
