answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 02/06/2015 answer text <p>Russia’s destabilisation of eastern Ukraine has resulted in a humanitarian crisis, with over 1.5 million people displaced, over 6000 people killed and tens of thousands wounded. The situation there will only improve when Russia abides by the commitments it made at Minsk; withdraws its troops, its heavy weaponry and support for the separatists.</p><p>Since Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea we have become increasingly concerned by the deteriorating human rights situation there. The UK will continue to work actively both bilaterally and multilaterally to ensure that States protect the right of all individuals to practise their religion or belief free from persecution or discrimination. The Government led efforts to rescue stranded Yazidis on Mount Sinjar after their persecution by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.</p><p>The UK is also active in the United Nations, European Union and other relevant international organisations in calling on States to promote and protect the right to freedom of religion or belief and ensure the free and equal participation of all in society. I also issued a statement on 17 May, setting out the Government's deep concern at the sentencing to death of former President Morsi and over 100 others.</p><p>Foreign and Commonwealth Office officials have also discussed this case with representatives of the Egyptian government.</p><p>We have been clear that the Egyptian authorities must apply the rule of law consistently in line with international standards, and protect the political and legal rights of all Egyptians as the basis for the country’s future stability. It is the long-standing policy of the Government to oppose the death penalty in all circumstances as a matter of principle. There remains an urgent need for all the parties to reach an agreement that addresses the underlying causes of the conflict in Gaza. This should ensure that Hamas and other militant groups permanently end rocket fire and other attacks against Israel and that Israel lifts its restrictions to allow the Gazan economy to grow. We welcome the recent positive steps that Israel has taken to ease some restrictions. The crossing has been mostly closed since the start of the year while the Egyptian government construct a buffer zone, though we understand the crossing has been opened in recent days for entry into Gaza.</p><p>We have encouraged the Egyptian authorities to ease the movement of bona fide travellers through Rafah, and in the longer term to consider expanding Rafah to passenger transit and humanitarian goods transit, which will help to ease humanitarian pressures. The Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, my right hon. Friend the Member for Runnymede and Weybridge (Mr Hammond), raised the importance of reopening the Rafah crossing when he spoke with the Egyptian Foreign Minister on 14 January.
