answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 09/01/2017 answer text <p>The murder of Russia's Ambassador to Turkey, Mr Andrei Karlov, on 19 December was a cowardly attack condemned by the Foreign Secretary, my Rt Hon. Friend the Member for Uxbridge and South Ruislip (Boris Johnson) in a statement the same day. At the seventh session, the UK was represented by delegates based both in London and at the UK Mission to the United Nations in New York, and delivered a statement which set out UK policy. In advance of the meeting, officials worked closely with likeminded partners and representatives from civil society, and ensured that the UK position was reflected in EU statements. As the Minister responsible for Africa, I spoke directly to the President-elect, Mr Adama Barrow, last week, to congratulate him on his victory and to offer the UK's support. But we are deeply concerned by President Jammeh's recent rejection of the elections' clear and legitimate result and strongly condemn any attempt to disrupt the peaceful, constitutional transfer of power. Tensions remain high following President Jammeh's legal challenge to the Supreme Court to annul the election results and the increased military checkpoints on the streets. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 15/12/2016 answer text <p>Prison conditions in Colombia, including over-population and the treatment of prisoners are particularly concerning. The Colombian Minister of Justice declared an emergency in the prison sector in May this year as 74 of Colombia's 138 prisons faced a shortage of medical staff. The detention of human rights defenders and activists in Colombia, often without trial or access to legal representation remains a concern. Access to justice and the rule of law remain central priorities for the UK in Colombia. Our Embassy in Bogotá has closely followed the cases of individual political prisoners, such as David Ravelo and Húber Ballesteros, discussing concerns with the Presidential Advisor for Human Rights and the prisons authority. Threats to land reform campaigners and HRDs may increase in the short term&quot;.</p><p>The presence of illegal armed groups across Colombia remains a concern, particularly in areas where the FARC will begin the process of disarmament. The UK's prioritises efforts to reduce impunity for human rights violations and abuses in our work with Colombia. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 05/12/2016 answer text <p>The UK commends the progress of Iraqi security forces in reclaiming territory from Daesh, including in the continuing operation to liberate Mosul. We recognise their bravery and sacrifice. The UK continues to support them in this effort. We are providing close air support and crucial intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance assets to target Daesh's communications, command and control, and infrastructure. As of 17 November, the RAF has carried out 1071 airstrikes in Iraq – the second highest number behind the US. We have also gifted counter-IED equipment, over 50 tonnes of non-lethal support such as body armour and medical supplies, 40 heavy machine guns, ammunition and around £600,000 worth of military equipment to help Iraqi forces in the fight against Daesh.</p><p>We condemn in the strongest terms Daesh's cowardly terrorist attacks on innocent civilians, regardless of the religious or ethnic background of those targeted, including the killing of over 75 Shia pilgrims on 24 November near Hilla. The Iraqi security forces are working to prevent such attacks. Ultimately, the only way to protect civilians and safeguard minority communities in Iraq is to defeat Daesh and deliver national reconciliation. Friend the Member for Maidenhead (Mrs May), where we discussed ways in which the UK could support Burma's political transition including the promotion of human rights and protection of minorities. The Foreign Secretary, my Rt Hon. Friend the Member for Uxbridge and South Ruislip (Mr Boris Johnson) also discussed the transition with her on 12 September during the same visit. In addition, the Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, my noble Friend, the Rt Hon. Baroness Anelay of St Johns, visited Burma from 9-12 November and met a number of Government Ministers to discuss human rights, democracy and the protection of minorities. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 01/12/2016 answer text <p>The British Government is deeply concerned by the recent flare-up of violence in Rakhine State. This was triggered on 9 October, when three Burmese Border Guard Police posts were attacked by armed Rohingya groups. We have called for restraint, humanitarian access and an investigation. We are aware of a number of disturbing reports of human rights violations by security forces in Rakhine State. We have made several representations to the Government of Burma, both through our Ambassador and also through Ministerial contacts. The Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, my noble Friend, the Rt Hon. Baroness Anelay of St Johns, visited Burma from 9-12 November. She urged Burmese Government Ministers to resume immediate humanitarian access to the affected areas in Northern Rakhine and for a full and independent investigation into all reports of human rights violations. The Government of Burma has committed publicly to do so.
