It retains its own board of directors who are responsible for the commercial decisions of RBS. These measures reduce taxes for the lowest income savers; reform the ISA regime to give savers greater flexibility as to where and how they save their money; and create new products to help retired savers see a better return.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Following the recommendations of the Sergeant Review of Simple Financial Products, the Government has also been driving – and will continue to drive – the financial services industry to design and bring to market further simple and transparent savings products which are fit for purpose and which consumers can more easily understand and trust, and to remove any other barriers to ensuring individuals can access an appropriate mix of financial services.</p><p> </p>

answer text <p>The Government has fundamentally reformed regulation of the consumer credit market, including credit cards. Consumer credit regulation transferred from the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) to the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) on 1 April 2014, this new, more robust regulatory system provides far stronger consumer protections and will help deliver the Government’s vision for a well-functioning and sustainable credit market.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The Government has ensured that the FCA has robust powers to curb credit fees and charges. The FCA has also committed to undertake a thorough review of the credit card market to assess whether competition is effective and whether consumers have access to credit cards that are affordable and deliver value for money. Ensuring that banks provide appropriate redress for their customers is a matter for the independent regulator, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) </strong></p><p><strong>The Government is supportive of action taken by the FCA to recompense customers for the mis-selling of payment protection insurance (PPI) and prevent cases of mis-selling in the future through regulatory action. The FCA has stated that it is keeping a close eye on how the industry handles all PPI complaints and will be quick to challenge anything it thinks is unfair.</strong></p><p> </p><p><strong>I have asked the FCA to write to the Member in more detail about action being taken in regard to PPI.
