The statutory Code of Practice for the Welfare of Gamebirds Reared for Sporting Purposes provides keepers with guidance on how to meet the welfare needs of their gamebirds, as required by the Act. The Code recommends that barren cages for breeding pheasants and small barren cages for breeding partridges should not be used and that any system should be appropriately enriched. There is a growing demand from UK consumers for food with a local provenance. We work with industry, including retailers, to promote the excellent produce available from across the UK.</p><p>Through the Food is GREAT campaign, Government works with a range of industry partners to champion UK food and drink, boosting our reputation as a great food nation whilst promoting our exports overseas.</p><p>It is important that customers can identify high quality food from the UK. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 08/12/2017 answer text <p>The Hunting Act 2004 bans all hunting of wild mammals with dogs in England and Wales, except where it is carried out in accordance with the exemptions set out in Schedule 1 to the Act.</p><p> </p><p>The enforcement of the Hunting Act 2004 is an operational matter for the police. The police have issued guidance to forces dealing with hunting issues in the ‘Hunting Act 2004 Investigators Manual’. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 30/11/2017 answer text <p>Section 1(1) of the Animal Welfare Act 2006 defines an animal for the purpose of the Act as a vertebrate other than man. This is because, as stated in the <em>Explanatory Notes</em> to the Act, vertebrates are currently “the only demonstrably sentient animals”. Section 1(3) of the Act provides powers to extend the definition of “animal” to cover invertebrates if scientific evidence shows they are also sentient; that is they “are capable of experiencing pain or suffering”.</p><p> </p><p>The main “cruelty” offence in the Act (at section 4) applies to all vertebrates commonly domesticated in the British Islands, whether they can be said to be under the control of man or not and to all other vertebrates under the control of man, or not living in a wild state (“protected animals)”. The Wild Mammals (Protection) Act 1996 specifically protects any other wild mammals from cruelty. The main “promotion of welfare” offence at section 9 of the Animal Welfare Act 2006 covers any vertebrate for which a person is responsible.
