HMS ENTERPRISE and a Merlin helicopter have been deployed on the European Union's Common Security and Defence Policy operation, launched on 22 June 2015 to disrupt the people smugglers' networks and destroy their boats. For those who struggle, the Government is committed to ensuring they receive the support they need and are treated with the dignity they deserve.</p><p> </p><p>One of the key tenets of the Covenant is that the Armed Forces community should, in some cases, be afforded special consideration. That is why, subject to clinical need, veterans receive priority care from NHS England and in the Devolved Administrations.</p><p> </p><p>Over the past five years we have allocated £40 million to support veterans with accommodation needs. In addition, the Chancellor announced in March that a new £25 million fund would be set up, to which charities can apply to assist our elderly veterans. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 01/07/2015 answer text <p>Under the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, the government responsible for the Search and Rescue Region in which assistance to those in distress at sea has occurred has the primary responsibility for ensuring that survivors are disembarked at the most convenient place of safety, with minimum deviation for the rescuing vessel.</p><p> </p><p>The Italian Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (IMRCC) manages all rescues in the Central Mediterranean area of operations. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 06/07/2015 answer text <p>In 2013, the Government made £35 million available to deliver Armed Forces Covenant commitments from fines levied on banks for the attempted manipulation of Libor. The cross-Government Covenant Reference Group, which is chaired by the Cabinet Office and includes representatives from key Government Departments, the Devolved Administrations, the Service charity sector, and the three Service Families Federations, set the priorities for the fund. The first two tranches focused on mental health and support for Service families, while the third tranche was open to any project meeting the principles of the Covenant.</p><p> </p><p>In 2014, a further £40 million of Libor funds were made available specifically to support veterans with a housing need via the Veterans Accommodation Fund (VAF). The criteria and application process for both schemes were published on gov.uk.</p><p> </p><p>Both funds were administered by the Armed Forces Covenant team. Against the agreed priorities, applicants had to demonstrate evidence of need, experience of providing a service and value for money. A decision panel was convened to agree the final allocation of funding.</p><p> </p><p>The panel for the £35 million fund sat three times between 2012 and 2014 and included representatives from the Ministry of Defence Covenant and Financial Governance teams, H M Treasury, COBSEO, the three Service Families Federations, and the Welsh and Scottish Governments.</p><p> </p><p>The panel for the VAF sat on 7 July 2014 and included representatives from the Ministry of Defence Covenant and Financial Governance teams, H M Treasury, the Welsh and Scottish Governments, the Army Families Federation, The Royal British Legion and COBSEO Housing Cluster.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p> answering member printed Earl Howe question first answered 06/07/2015 15:18:31 answering member 2000 label Biography information for Earl Howe

answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 30/06/2015 answer text <p>Twice a year, members of the UK Defence Medical Services attend the two-day Exercise Surgical Training courses in Denmark, in which live but fully anaesthetised pigs are shot with wounds, which are then treated in real-time exercises by surgical teams, then humanely put down .</p><p>This training is essential to ensure our medical personnel are ready to carry out potentially life-saving surgery on battle casualties with serious bullet and blast wounds. We use mannequin simulators for as much surgical training as possible, but none of those currently available are sophisticated enough to replicate control of real-time internal haemorrhage from traumatic combat injury.</p><p>During each two-day course, UK surgical teams will operate on two pigs (one on each day), making a total of four per year.
