<p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>It is important that the police have the ability to conduct
a thorough search of any suspect (irrespective of age) whilst in police custody, not
only to investigate crimes of which they are suspected, but also for their own safety
whilst in custody. The use of these powers is an operational matter for the Chief
Constable of each police force in England and Wales. However, their use must be in
accordance with the safeguards set out in the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984
Code of Practice C. <br><br>The Government takes the welfare of children very seriously.
It is for this reason that the Home Secretary has asked Her Majesty's Inspector of
Constabulary to include the use of the strip search procedure on children as part
of the thematic inspection into the treatment of vulnerable people in police custody,
which was commissioned in January.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p>
