answer text
The Answer of 1 February 2022 to Question 113112 included an estimate for the net change in self-employment since the start of Covid-19 (based on responses to the Labour Force Survey). This estimate does not necessarily represent people no-longer in paid work, as some may have become employees. The estimate cannot be broken-down geographically due to the sample size of the Labour Force Survey.

more like this

answer text
The Restart Scheme started in July 2021 and offers a 12 month period of enhanced support to participants. The main objective for the Restart Scheme is to secure sustained employment for participants, which is achieved when a participant reaches a level of earnings equivalent to 16 hours per week at National Living Wage for 6 months, within 18 months of starting on the Scheme. This means it will take time before job outcome data is sufficiently robust and representative of Scheme performance.
more like this

answer text
Universal Credit(UC) encompasses several legacy benefits in one and can be claimed in many different circumstances by those who are entitled. UC is not only for those unemployed and can be claimed by people in various circumstances – such as those with a health condition or terminal illness, balancing parenthood or caring. It can also help to support low income or self-employed earnings.

The Department works hard to dispel any stigmatisation by regularly communicating with the public about benefits through paid advertising, stakeholder and employer engagement and no cost campaigns to help people understand their entitlement and the support we can provide as a safety net and in times of need. During the pandemic this has been particularly important as many people needed to claim benefits for the first time. Meanwhile, we always keenly help people to progress, train and move forward where possible and help the most vulnerable in society to have all the support they are rightly entitled too even in later life right through to pension age and beyond.

answer text
Estimates of (a) unemployment and (b) youth unemployment in the year to Jun 2021 based on the Annual Population Survey are published and available here. Guidance for users can be found here. No specific assessment has been made of the factors underlying unemployment in Coventry North East and the sample sizes for Coventry North East may make drawing conclusions from this data difficult.

However, we want everyone to be able to find a job, progress in work and thrive in the labour market, whoever they are and wherever they live.

Throughout the pandemic the UK Government has provided historic levels of support to the economy – a total of over £400 billion. This includes key DWP programmes such as Restart and Kickstart alongside other measures to boost work searches, skills and apprenticeships. Our support was in addition to the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (Furlough) and the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme.

We recognise that young people’s needs will vary depending on where they live and their own individual circumstances.

The Coventry Youth Hub, just 1 of 150 currently open, works with a range of local partners and can help people address and overcome barriers to employment. Our experienced and well-trained Work Coaches have access to tools that help them understand vacancies and skills needs. Work Coaches are prioritising face-to-face activity so we can support them into work, and a year after the first young people started, over 100,000 have now taken-up a Kickstart job. This is an incredible achievement and we have announced a run-on of Kickstart to March 2022, to further support people into jobs.

answer text
Around 1.4 million eligible pensioners across Great Britain receive some £5 billion in Pension Credit which tops up their retirement income and is a passport to other financial help such as support with housing costs, council tax, heating bills and a free TV licence for those over 75.

We continue to use every opportunity to encourage pensioners to check their eligibility and make a claim. For example, on 16 June as part of a media day of action on Pension Credit, DWP joined forces with Age UK as well as the BBC to help reach, via national and local media, older people who may be reticent about claiming it. More recently, on 7 September, I met the BBC Director General to discuss other opportunities to work together to get information about Pension Credit to pensioners and their family members. We have also set up a working group including organisations such as Age UK, Independent Age, the BBC and British Telecom to explore innovative ways to reach eligible pensioners. The most recent meeting of the working group took place on 19 October.

Earlier this year, over 11 million pensioners in Great Britain received information about Pension Credit in the leaflet accompanying their annual State Pension up-rating letter. They will do so again next year.

There are no plans to review the existing Pension Credit backdating rules.
