answer text
The Veterans Welfare Service is available at all stages to assist a Veteran through the process of making a claim. Data is captured to understand the total number of claims made, clearance times and outcomes. There are many reasons why an applicant may not choose to continue a claim, which is a private matter for them, and is not information the Ministry of Defence needs to capture in order to process claims or monitor performance. Veterans UK is embarked on a £40 million programme to put all pension and compensation services online and digitise what can be very substantial paper files. This will significantly reduce the time taken to respond to veterans' enquiries. The design of the new system has not yet been finalised and I have asked my officials to investigate the practicalities of capturing management information on withdrawals as part of that work.

more like this

answer text
This information is not held in the format requested. The Ministry of Defence (MOD) does not collect or hold information on all veterans and cannot say where veterans of the Armed Forces take up employment post service. The MOD does not routinely maintain a record of an employee’s prior employment.

However, the Government have successfully piloted the Great Place to Work scheme across six government Departments which includes Defence and have commenced the roll out of this initiative across Departments for all Civil Service roles, including Senior Civil Servant positions by the end of March 2022. answer text
The Independent Advisory Military Sub-Committee (AMSC) was re-established in 2019 to offer advice to the Committee on the Grant of Honours Decorations and Medals (the HD Committee) in the Cabinet Office on historic military medals claims, including cases which may not have been previously considered or where new evidence has emerged. The HD Committee is the principal body with responsibility for making recommendations on honours, awards, and medals.

The outcome of the review by the AMSC into the case of medallic recognition for all those who participated in the British Nuclear Test Programme during the period 1952 to 1991 was published by the Cabinet Office on 10 December 2020. The AMSC concluded that the case did not meet the level of risk and rigour which is generally required for the award of a campaign medal or clasp and the Ministry of Defence respects the findings of the independent review. This decision in no way diminishes the contribution of veterans who participated in the Nuclear Test Programme, and the Government continues to acknowledge and be grateful to all Service personnel who participated.
