answer text <p>As I made clear in the debate on the Armed Forces Covenant on 22 October 2014 (Official Report, columns 971-1004), the implementation of the Covenant in Northern Ireland is going from strength to strength. The Armed Forces Covenant annual report, laid before the house on 16 December 2014, highlights the good progress that was made during 2014; nearly all of the measures in the Covenant now extend to Northern Ireland or will soon do so.</p><p>I am planning to visit Northern Ireland in due course to see for myself the results of this good progress and the benefits which this has brought for the Armed Forces Community in the Province.</p><p>We will continue to work with the Northern Ireland Executive to ensure that the needs of the Armed Forces community are met.</p><p> </p> more like this

answer text <p>This Government is determined to tackle child abuse in whatever form it occurs, including in the Armed Forces. If a Commanding Officer (CO) is made aware of an allegation against a person subject to Service law or a civilian subject to Service discipline, or circumstances contained within the Armed Forces Act 2006, Schedule 2 (which includes the offence under Section 1 of the Children and Young Persons Act 1933 and child sex offences under the Sexual Offences Act 2003) he must as soon as reasonably practicable ensure that the Service Police are made aware of the matter.</p><p>If an allegation does not fall within Schedule 2, the Commanding Officer is still under a statutory obligation to ensure that the matter is investigated in such a way and to such an extent as is appropriate or to ensure that, as soon as practicable, the Service Police are aware of the matter.</p><p>Any individual who is concerned about the safety of a child should contact either the Service or Civilian Police Forces.</p>

answer text <p>The Ministry of Defence (MOD) holds information about investigations of alleged child abuse where the Service Police had jurisdiction and the investigative lead. Numbers of investigations in each year since 2010 are set out below. Expenditure on taxi fares by civilian staff is not recorded discretely, but is subsumed in a public transport audit and reporting category that also includes expenditure on bus and underground travel. MOD may use a taxi for official duty when there is a business benefit to the Department or when it saves money. A taxi is typically used where no other suitable form of public transport is available or where heavy baggage or equipment has to be carried.</p><p>(2) First-class rail travel is currently authorised only exceptionally (for example, for medical reasons or for solo-occupancy sleeper travel)</p><p>(3) Overseas travel in other than economy class is permitted only where both the flight duration is over 4 hours and there is a business case to demonstrate that the circumstances warrant it (for example, where significant business has to be done on arrival following an overnight flight).</p><p>We are, under our transformational programmes, encouraging and facilitating the adoption of working practices that minimise the need to travel (such as audio and video conferencing). Those staff who need to travel must do so in a way that is the most economical in both cost and official time.</p>
