answer text
The EHRC has submitted this report to the United Nations as part of its work on monitoring the Convention on the Elimination of All forms of Discrimination Against Women.

The Government is firmly committed to tackling the major injustices across Great Britain that hold women back, including eliminating violence against women and girls and closing the gender pay gap. We have already made significant progress on safeguarding and improving women’s rights.

The draft EU Withdrawal Agreement, once finalised and agreed will allow the UK to continue participation in EU programmes until their closure, including the Rights, Equality and Citizenship Fund, which promotes non-discrimination, combats racism, xenophobia, homophobia and other forms of intolerance as well as promoting rights and equality.

This Government has already made a clear commitment to protect workers’ rights, and ensure that they keep pace with the changing labour market, including in our recent white paper on the future relationship between the UK and the EU. We do not need to be part of the EU to have strong protections in the workplace. The UK already goes beyond EU minimum standards in a number of areas, such as entitlement to annual leave, paid maternity leave and parental leave.

answer text
In its White Paper the Government is advancing a detailed proposal for a principled and practical Brexit, including in financial services.

The UK proposes a new economic and regulatory arrangement with the EU in financial services. This would maintain the economic benefits of cross-border provision of the most important international financial services traded between the UK and the EU.

We have also listened to the other side’s concerns and understand the need for a new and fair balance in our rights and obligations in relation to financial services. As such, our proposal recognises the EU’s desire to have control over its own decision making but it also reflects the deeply integrated nature of UK and EU financial markets.

We have suggested how this could be done, by setting out that the new arrangement should include provisions for:

common principles for the governance of the relationship;

extensive supervisory cooperation and regulatory dialogue; and

predictable, transparent and robust processes.

We believe this proposal is the best option for getting a good deal for both the EU and the UK, and we look forward to discussing it with them.

However, a responsible government should prepare for all potential outcomes, including the unlikely scenario in which no mutually satisfactory agreement can be reached. That is exactly what we are doing.

In the event of a no deal scenario, the Government’s objective is to ensure that movement through ports is as frictionless as possible, whilst maintaining safety and security. This extends to the food, fishery and farming sectors.
more like this

answer text
The UK is home to the world’s preeminent financial centre and the government is committed to maintaining and enhancing this position post-Brexit. In addition to our natural advantages, such as a central time zone and the English language, we have strengths across all the major sectors – banking, asset management, and insurance – alongside a globally respected regulatory system, and world-class legal and professional services.

Alongside these strengths, we also already have a competitive tax offer. The UK corporation tax rate is the lowest in the G20 at just 19 per cent, and is legislated to fall to 17 per cent in 2020. All together, these factors have made the City of London the world’s leading financial centre and will continue to do so.

As the Chancellor of the Exchequer set out in his Mansion House speech in June, the government has a long-term vision for the future of UK financial services, based on ensuring the continued innovation, resilience, and openness of the sector. This includes strengthening the UK’s already world-leading positions in the markets of the future, whether in Fintech, green and sustainable finance, or rupee and renminbi products.

answer text
The number of workers aged 50 and over currently in employment is at a record high of 10.1 million - an increase of 1.4 million over the last 5 years and an increase of 2.2 million over the last 10 years.

The Equality Act 2010, already provides strong protection against direct and indirect age discrimination in employment and makes it unlawful for an employer or an employment service provider such as a recruitment agency, to discriminate against an older employee or job applicant because of their age, and this applies both where the employer is making arrangements to fill a job, and in respect of anything done during the course of a person’s employment. DWP continues to work with businesses and stakeholder organisations to support older workers to remain in and return to work and challenge outdated perceptions about older workers.

The Government is committed to supporting people aged 50 and over to remain in and return to the labour market and in Feb 2017, published a new strategy ‘Fuller Working Lives: A Partnership Approach’. The Strategy is led by employers, but also sets out the case for action by individuals, and the role of Government in supporting older workers to remain in and return to work. The Strategy and supporting evidence base are available on the gov.uk website. Additionally, the Government announced a National Retraining Scheme in the Autumn Budget 2017 - an ambitious, far-reaching programme to drive adult learning and retraining. The National Retraining Scheme will give individuals the skills they need to progress in work, redirect their careers and secure the high-paid, high-skilled jobs of the future, focusing on those individuals and places who need it most.
