We have increased and introduced new penalties for littering and fly-tipping and given councils the power to stop and seize vehicles of suspected fly-tippers. In early February 2021, we held roundtables for groups of stakeholders to discuss potential measures to end the use of horticultural peat. We intend to publish a formal consultation in 2021 on further measures to end its use.</p><p> </p><p>In 2019, peat extraction accounted for an estimated 2.4 million tonnes of CO<sub>2</sub> emissions in the UK, or 0.5% of the UK’s total. For England, the figure is 0.2 million tonnes. It enables the transfer of levy, collected at slaughter, between the English, Scottish and Welsh levy bodies. This will recognise that in some cases, animals have spent some of their life and gained some of their value in another part of Great Britain. The Government has committed to publish a new tobacco control plan for England later this year, to deliver its ambition of a smoke-free country by 2030. Stakeholder engagement will commence shortly.
