I recently wrote to all Police and Crime Commissioners and Chief Constables setting
out a programme of engagement to better understand the impact of changing demands
on the sector and what more can be done to improve productivity and efficiency. As
part of this engagement I will be speaking to the Mayor of Greater Manchester.

The
Government protected overall police spending in the 2015 Spending Review, and the
2017/18 police funding settlement maintains that commitment. The Greater Manchester
Mayor’s direct resource funding for his Police & Crime Commissioner functions
(including council tax precept) is £545.4 million in 2017/18, an increase of £4.2
million on funding levels for 2015/16. It is a matter for Chief Constables, working
with their Police and Crime Commissioners, to manage their available resources according
to local priorities.

The Home Office collects and publishes data on the size
of the police workforce at police force area level, the latest of which are available
