answer text
As of 31 December 2021, the Department employed five full-time equivalent (FTE) on a permanent basis working on matters relating to equality, diversity and inclusivity, supplemented by 6.8 FTE on a temporary basis, 11.8 FTE in total. These roles ensured that the Department’s statutory obligations were met and supported direct delivery of the Civil Service and departmental inclusion strategy.

In 2022, to reflect both the evolving agenda and as part of seeking efficiencies, the Department reviewed its overall resource requirements. Therefore, as of 31 December 2022, two FTE were employed on a permanent basis working on matters relating to equality, diversity and inclusivity, supported by four FTE on a temporary basis, (six FTE in total). These roles ensure that the Department’s statutory obligations are met, support direct delivery of the Civil Service and departmental inclusion strategy and now have wider responsibilities delivering organisational development, engagement and leadership activities.

The figures exclude employees of executive agencies and non-ministerial departments, as that data is not held centrally.

answer text
The Government has funded an additional 1,500 undergraduate medical school places per year for domestic students in England, a 25% increase, taking the total number of medical school training places in England to 7,500 each year. This expansion was completed in September 2020 and has delivered five new medical schools in England.

In addition, the Government temporarily lifted the cap on medical school places for students who completed A-Levels in 2020 and in 2021 and who had an offer from a university in England to study medicine, subject to their grades. As a result of this temporary change, the intakes for 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 were 8,405 and 8,460 respectively, significantly above the planned expansion cap of 7,500.

NHS England has been commissioned to produce a long-term workforce plan. The Government has committed to publishing the plan shortly which will include independently verified forecasts for the number of healthcare professionals required in future years, taking account of improvements in retention and productivity. The workforce plan is for the whole of the National Health Service workforce.

answer text
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has reviewed other international mandatory and non-mandatory reporting systems for healthcare professionals and found limited evidence that making reporting mandatory increases the ability to detect safety signals. Very few international mandatory reporting systems have a better reporting rate or a more successful system for detecting safety signals than the United Kingdom.

In both medicines and devices legislation there are requirements for manufacturers to report, but there is no legal obligation for healthcare organisations. However, there are professional body standards and guidelines that make reporting a gold standard for healthcare professionals. The MHRA continues to work with partners across the healthcare system to promote and encourage use of the Yellow Card scheme to help detect safety issues.

The MHRA has reviewed global approaches to mandatory reporting in other regulatory systems and continues to consider the approach in the UK as we work to improve reporting capability and functionality through systems.

answer text
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) recognises the importance of both public and healthcare professional understanding of, and access to the MHRA Yellow Card scheme, so that they can promptly report any concerns they have about the safety of healthcare products. The MHRA monitors the number of reports it receives from members of the public and healthcare professionals and strives to keep improving understanding and awareness of the reporting system. The MHRA continually works to encourage reporting of any safety concerns to the Yellow Card scheme and help improve the safe use of medicines and medical devices for everyone.

A sharp increase in reporting, mainly from patients, has been seen due to better awareness of the scheme following significant communications activity at the start of the COVID-19 vaccination campaign.
more like this

Government is therefore prioritising these major rebuilds. Considering this, the Government is not inviting further schemes to join the programme at this time. Going forward, new schemes will be considered through a rolling programme of capital investment in hospital infrastructure to secure the building of new hospitals beyond 2030.
more like this
