Two surveys run annually: Active Lives Adult, and Active Lives Children and Young People. These surveys measure the activity levels of people across England and allows the Government to collect accurate data on what and how much sport and physical activity different groups are participating in. You can find out more about the surveys on <a href="https://www.sportengland.org/research-and-data/data/active-lives" target="_blank">Sport England's website</a>.</p><ul><li><p>2009/10</p></li><ul><li><p>Active People survey - 15.2 million people took part in sport and wider physical activity for an average of at least 30 minutes a week.</p></li><li><p>Children and young people - Sport England only started collecting data in 2017.</p></li></ul></ul><ul><li><p>2018/19</p></li><ul><li><p>Active Lives Adult survey - 28.6 million took part in 150+ minutes of activity a week.</p></li><li><p>Active Lives Children and Young People survey - 3.3 million doing an average of 60+ minutes per day.</p></li></ul></ul><ul><li><p>2022/23</p></li><ul><li><p>Active Lives Adult survey - 29.5 million took part in 150+ minutes of activity a week.</p></li><li><p>Active Lives Children and Young people survey - 3.5 million doing an average of 60+ minutes per day.</p></li></ul></ul><p>It’s important to note that comparing data on a consistent basis across this time is not possible as the methodologies and metrics employed changed to reflect changes in the Chief Medical Officers’ (CMO) guidance.</p><p>Since 2010, the CMO guidelines on physical activity changed from five separate sessions of 30 minutes of at least moderate intensity physical activity in a week to at least 150 minutes of moderate equivalent intensity physical activity a week. In our sport strategy ‘Get Active’ we set out our unapologetic ambition to build a more active nation, with a target to get 3.5 million more people classed as ‘active’ by 2030.</p><p>The Government provides support for grassroots sport through our Arm’s Length Body, Sport England - which receives £323 million in Exchequer and Lottery funding each year.</p><p>Since 2019 Sport England has provided the following support:</p><ul><li><p>Australian rules football- £100,020</p></li><li><p>Ice hockey- £2,060,816</p></li><li><p>Surfing- £1,362,561</p></li></ul><p>Sport England also provides support for grassroots sport through a range of available funds, including the Small Grants Programme and the Active Together Fund. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 19/09/2023 answer text <p>The government is committed to supporting economic growth in the sector, and ensuring this translates into tangible outcomes that span grassroots participation through to elite performance. In turn, this can help stimulate the contribution sport makes to growing the national economy.</p><p>The government’s previous Sport Satellite Account estimated that the gross value added (GVA) of the sport sector in 2019 was £48.9 billion. This marked an increase of 2.9% between 2018 and 2019, and of 20.4% between 2010 and 2019, in real terms. In addition, major sporting events have significant benefits for the national economy and for attracting investment to the UK. The hosting of the 2022 events (excluding Commonwealth Games), had a direct economic impact of £132 million, supported 1,600 jobs and had a 6:1 return on investment. The short-term impact alone of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games contributed almost £871 million GVA to the UK economy.</p><p>In our new sport strategy, Get Active, we have set out our ambition to deliver a new economic snapshot that articulates the economic value and growth opportunities that exist within sport in the UK. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 01/12/2022 answer text <p>The Government is committed to building on the UK’s world-leading sporting reputation, and we are supporting our athletes and international sport activity through over £77 million investment per year in UK Sport for the Paris Olympic and Paralympic cycle.</p><p>We also ensure the UK is a global focus for sport through our hosting of major sporting events. This year has seen us successfully host a number of major sporting events, including the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, UEFA Women’s Euros and the Rugby League World Cup.</p><p>Looking ahead, we continue to build on our pipeline of events hosted in the UK between now and 2030. These include the UCI World Cycling Championships in Glasgow in 2023, the return of the UEFA Champions League Final to Wembley in 2024, the women’s Rugby World Cup in England in 2025, the European Athletics Championships 2026 in Birmingham, as well as both the 2026 Women's T20 Cricket World Cup (England and Wales) and the 2030 Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup (UK and Ireland). We recognise that taking part in sport brings communities together and contributes to making people both happier and healthier.</p><p>The majority of funding to grassroots sports projects is delivered through our Arms Length Body, Sport England. Last year, Sport England received almost £350 million from the Exchequer and National Lottery.</p><p>The government also invests £18 million a year into community sport facilities via the Football Foundation, alongside the English Football Association and the Premier League.
