According to the Government’s ‘Supporting Mental Health in Schools and Colleges survey’, 90% of schools offered staff training on supporting pupils' mental health and wellbeing (47% all staff, 43% at least some staff) and 49% had a dedicated lead for mental health. As part of this, the Government will incentivise schools to put in place Designated Senior Leads (DSLs) for mental health, and will provide training on how to promote and support good mental health and wellbeing. DSLs will be supported by new, clinically supervised Mental Health Support Teams based in or near schools, which will provide support for those with mild to moderate needs, as well as better links to specialist NHS services for those who need them. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 16/04/2018 answer text <p>The survey ‘Supporting mental health in schools and colleges’[1] shows the extensive help that schools provide for their pupils at present.</p><p>In December 2017 the Government published the green paper ‘Transforming children and young people’s mental health provision’,[2] which sets out further support, including designated senior leads for mental health in schools and colleges, and a significant increase in the number of early intervention practitioners</p><p>The Department is considering how mental health and wellbeing should be covered in the curriculum, as part of a process to determine the content of Relationships education and Relationships and Sex Education, and the future status of Personal, Social, Health and Economic education. In providing education and support, schools and colleges must have regard to their equalities duties, including ensuring that they meet the needs of Black and Minority Ethnic (BAME) pupils.</p><p>As the Against the Odds report suggests, behaviour management and exclusions practice in schools is an important factor. The Department of Health and Social Care is funding Mental Health First Aid training to all secondary schools, and has committed to offering training in mental health awareness to every primary school during this Parliament. In addition the Government has funded MindEd, a free online portal that provides training for all adults working with children and young people about mental health problems. The additional £1.4 billion the Government is making available for children and young people’s mental health services up to 2020, includes £150 million specifically targeted at improving support for young people with eating disorders. The green paper ‘Transforming children and young people’s mental health provision’ set out proposals for new mental health support teams to provide further trained and clinically-supervised support to young people in school.</p><p> </p><p>The Government has also funded the provision of information and advice to schools. MindEd (<a href="https://www.minded.org.uk/" target="_blank">https://www.minded.org.uk/</a>) is a free online portal that provides training for all adults working with children and young people about mental health problems. It includes specific information on eating disorders. The Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) Association has also produced advice on how to teach pupils in all four Key Stages about mental health. This includes specific advice on age-appropriate teaching about body image and eating disorders in secondary school.</p><p> </p><p>The Government has sought views, via a thorough engagement process, on the content of Relationships Education and Relationships and Sex Education, and on the status of PSHE – including on issues such as body image and eating disorders.
