We have made several statements expressing concern about the detention and sentencing of prominent members of civil society. Most recently, I issued statements on 13 August and 1 September following the sentencing of human rights defenders Leyla and Arif Yunus, and investigative journalist Khadija Ismayilova, respectively. Friend the Member for Runnymede and Weybridge (Mr Hammond), met President Klaus Iohannis and set out the positive impact that the Romanian government could have on the business environment by further tackling corruption and improving the predictability of impact of legislation.</p><p>The British Government will continue to carefully monitor the development of the rule of law and the fight against corruption including by encouraging Romania’s ongoing efforts towards meeting the benchmarks of the EU’s Cooperation and Verification mechanism. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 07/07/2015 answer text <p>I frequently have calls with my NATO counterparts and discuss a range of issues including NATO. We are in regular contact with Romania and NATO Allies on the implementation of NATO’s Readiness Action Plan (RAP) agreed at the Wales Summit last September, which includes the development of the NATO Force Integration Units (NFIU) in six eastern Allies. In March 2015, the Secretary of State for Defence, my right hon. Friend the Member for Sevenoaks (Mr Fallon), visited Romania, calling on the President, Prime Minister and Defence Minister to discuss these issues. NATO Defence Ministers met in Brussels on 24-25 June to assess progress since Wales. It was agreed that overall there continued to be good progress on RAP implementation and that the six NFIUs would be fully manned by the end of the year. The UK is playing a leading role in this effort. Romania’s NFIU will support planning, conduct host nation liaison and facilitate the rapid deployment of the new Very High Readiness Joint Task Force. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 22/06/2015 answer text <p>The EU Referendum Bill introduced to Parliament on 28 May 2015 dis-applies section 125 of the Political Parties, Elections and Referendum Act 2000 for the purposes of the referendum. The statutory restrictions contained in section 125 would have prevented many types of Government business in the final 28 days of the campaign dealing with any issue raised by the referendum question, presenting serious operational difficulties. In order to fulfil the manifesto commitment on which it was elected, the Government will also need to be able to set out the results of its renegotiation and its view on those results. The Government therefore does not believe that it would have been appropriate for the section 125 restrictions to apply in full.</p><p>The designated organisations for the yes and no campaigns should take the lead in a vibrant and robust debate. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 12/06/2015 answer text <p>The Government is concerned about the reducing space for civil society and freedom of expression in Azerbaijan, including the detention of a number of high profile members of civil society. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has issued a number of statements expressing concern, most recently on 17 and 23 April 2015, following the sentencing of human rights defender, Rasul Jafarov, and human rights lawyer, Intigam Aliyev respectively. We consistently raise our concerns both bilaterally and in international organisations such as the Council of Europe, the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe and the UN. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 15/10/2014 answer text <p>As set out in its 2010 Strategic Concept, NATO is committed to the long-term goal of a world without nuclear weapons. However, for as long as nuclear weapons exist, NATO has stated that it will remain a nuclear alliance.</p><p>The United Kingdom fully supports efforts to combat the proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction through the universalisation of the Chemical Weapons Convention and the Biological and Toxic Weapons Convention. Furthermore, the UK will continue to work to make nuclear weapons less necessary, with the goal of making them unnecessary. We believe that the best way to achieve a world without nuclear weapons is through gradual disarmament negotiated step–by-step within the framework of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva.
