answer text <p>I and my departmental colleagues regularly hold discussions with the Chancellor of the Exchequer and Ministerial colleagues on a range of topics including the filing of tax returns for smaller businesses and the self-employed. The Government is committed to making it easier for taxpayers to get their tax right and reducing the level of the tax gap from avoidable errors. HMRC’s Making Tax Digital (MTD) initiative is a key component of doing this. The Government is considering the consultation feedback received to ensure the successful implementation of MTD.</p> more like this

answer text <p>The Government is committed to strengthening the voice of the workforce at boardroom level. The Government’s green paper on Corporate Governance Reform sought views on a range of options for achieving this including the creation of stakeholder advisory panels, designating non-executive directors to ensure that the voices of key interested groups, especially that of employees, is being heard at board level, and appointing individual employee or stakeholder representatives to company boards. The Government will publish its response to the green paper consultation in due course.</p> more like this

answer text <p>Since April 2016, when the penalty regime for failure to pay employment tribunal awards started, 349 warning letters and 152 penalty notices have been issued.</p><p>Four financial penalties have been paid and 148 remain unpaid. Of these, 101 are being pursued through a debt collection agency, 20 were withdrawn because the employment tribunal award was paid, 10 are not enforceable due to liquidation and/or insolvency and 17 are within the payment period.</p><p>Over £500,000 in previously unpaid awards has been recovered following the issuing of only a warning letter. Over £91,000 has been recovered as a result of issuing both a warning letter and a penalty notice.</p> more like this

answer text <p>Support for businesses in Scotland is largely a devolved matter, and <a href="https://www.mygov.scot/business/" target="_blank">https://www.mygov.scot/business/</a> provides advice to people starting, running and growing a business, including a section on funding and grants in Scotland. In addition, British Business Bank (BBB) programmes are supporting finance to smaller businesses. As at end of December 2016, BBB programmes were supporting over £1.4m* to small businesses in East Renfrewshire. This includes 33 start-up loans totalling over £170,000.</p><p>Alongside designing and delivering programmes through its partners, the British Business Bank works to promote the provision of better information in the market to increase smaller businesses’ understanding of the finance options available to them. The Business Finance Guide (<a href="http://www.thebusinessfinanceguide.co.uk/bbb" target="_blank">http://www.thebusinessfinanceguide.co.uk/bbb</a> ) sets out the different sources of finance available to businesses – from start-ups to SMEs and growing mid-sized companies.</p><p>In order to support innovation by small businesses, Innovate UK awarded 99 projects to SMEs in Scotland with a commitment of £16.7 million in 2016/17.</p><p>Small businesses in Scotland also benefit from UK-wide initiatives to encourage investment, for example the Enterprise Investment Scheme and the Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme. If they have business premises, small businesses will also benefit from the Small Business Bonus Scheme and receive 100% relief on their rates bill for property valued below £10,000.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p><strong><em>*this does not include ENABLE funding data as this is not available at a constituency level</em></strong></p>
