This is an element of the £6.6 billion for local highway maintenance the Department for Transport is providing between 2015 and 2021.</p><p> </p><p>Barnsley Council (along with Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield City Councils) is a constituent member of the Sheffield City Region Combined Authority. All pollution levels close to the motorway were below the legal thresholds. Highways England are therefore not proposing any specific measures there, but are implementing wider measures designed to improve air quality.</p><p>More generally, Highways England have been undertaking extensive research into potential air quality solutions for the Strategic Road Network (SRN), and published their air quality strategy in 2017. They have explored a wide range of ideas including different traffic management options and different types of barrier design, and sought to understand the impediments to greater use of electric vans on the network. To address these, a joint letter to local authorities was issued on 28 September 2018 by Nusrat Ghani MP, Minister for Accessible Travel and Kit Malthouse MP, Minister for Housing and Planning. The Department for Transport issued guidance on the development of these schemes in ‘Local Transport Note 1/12: Shared use routes for pedestrians and cyclists’. It stresses the importance of high quality, inclusive design which addresses the needs of all users, including older people and disabled people.
