answer text <p>As noted in the response to PQ 85113, the Home Office collects data on the number of fraud and Computer Misuse Act (CMA) cases reported to Action Fraud that have been recorded as criminal offences by the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB). The Home Office does not hold the information requested in questions 95751 and 95752.</p><p>Reports submitted to Action Fraud are considered by the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB). Where enough evidence is available and viable leads are identified, actionable intelligence packages are created and sent to the appropriate local police force.</p><p>Reports not deemed viable for investigation by local police forces are not closed but remain under constant consideration for links to newly reported crimes. The intelligence is also used to identify opportunities to disrupt offenders, protect victims, and prevent further frauds.</p> more like this

answer text <p>The Home Office collects data on the number of fraud and Computer Misuse Act (CMA) cases reported to Action Fraud that have been recorded as criminal offences by the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB).</p><p>Such data is published by the Office for National Statistics on a quarterly basis and the most recently available data for the year ending March 2020 can be found, along with a time series, in Table A4 here: <a href="https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/crimeandjustice/datasets/crimeinenglandandwalesappendixtables" target="_blank">https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/crimeandjustice/datasets/crimeinenglandandwalesappendixtables</a>.</p><p>The Home Office also collects information on the number of fraud and CMA offences that the NFIB refer to police forces for investigation and on the number of fraud and CMA outcomes recorded by the police. answer text <p>The decision on whether to investigate a crime rests solely with the police who will take into account available resources, the likely eventual outcome and other criminal cases already under investigation.</p><p>If a member of public is not satisfied with the service provided by Action Fraud or NFIB, they can make a complaint via the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) or the City of London Police’s Professional Standards Directorate (PSD).</p><p>Furthermore, there are alternative routes to redress that, depending on the nature of the allegation, a member of the public may wish to pursue. One of these is to pursue the case through a civil route. Information on this can be sought by contacting Citizen’s Advice.</p> more like this

answer text <p>Victims in England, Wales and Northern Ireland are encouraged to report these crimes directly to Action Fraud, the centralised reporting centre for fraud and cybercrime. Those in Scotland should report directly to Police Scotland, via the 101 service.</p><p>It is vital that victims of fraud have the confidence to come forward and know that their case will be dealt with.</p><p>The City of London Corporation (as the Police Authority for the City of London Police) commissioned an independent review by Sir Craig Mackey QPM into the standards, culture and management of Action Fraud. The findings and recommendations of that review were published on 24<sup>th</sup> January on the City of London Police Authority’s website, currently available at https://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/assets/About-us/action-fraud-report.pdf</p><p>The review highlights the need to improve the victim experience, with a focus on answering times, the time callers spend waiting in queues and the percentage of calls that are answered. The City of London Police are addressing Sir Craig’s recommendations regarding Action Fraud and the NFIB, working with the City of London Corporation, the National Crime Agency and the Home Office.</p><p> </p><p>City of London Police transparently publish their response times. These are currently available at: https://www.actionfraud.police.uk/fraud-stats. We monitor these stats closely, working with City of London Police to understand any monthly drops in response times.</p>
