answer text <p>We have provided an extra £6.6 billion to manage COVID-19 pressures in the first half of 2021/22. Efforts are underway to boost the performance of the emergency care system including an extra £55 million investment in ambulance trusts and ongoing work on major emergency department upgrade schemes. Emergency department capacity will be increased through expanding waiting areas and increasing the number of treatment cubicles which will reduce overcrowding and improve infection control measures.</p><p>In addition, providers will offer the flu vaccine to over 35 million people this winter season. This includes a continued offer of vaccination for 50 to 64 year olds and the expansion of the children’s programme to secondary school year 11 to protect children and prevent onward transmission to vulnerable members of the community.</p> more like this

answer text <p>Gene therapies have the potential to treat hereditary and non-hereditary diseases that are a cause of long-term health conditions and poor quality of life. The Government supports research, development and adoption readiness of advanced therapy medicinal products, including gene therapies, through the Advanced Therapy Treatment Centre network, which is hosted by the Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult. The Department has also invested over £9 million in NHS Blood and Transplants’ Clinical Biotechnology Centre which manufactures recombinant proteins and gene therapy products for use in clinical trials enabling access for patients to the latest therapies.</p> more like this

answer text <p>We have committed £9.6 billion to support National Health Service recovery from COVID-19, including £1 billion to increase activity and reduce waiting times. We continue to support partnerships with independent sector providers to bring in additional capacity and we have invested £325 million in diagnostic equipment to improve clinical outcomes.</p><p>In addition, we have introduced a programme of ‘elective accelerators’ in a dozen areas across the country which will receive a share of £160 million to implement and evaluate innovative ways to increase the number of elective procedures they deliver.
