answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 01/07/2019 answer text <p>There are immediate environmental benefits from planting trees for new woodland creation; these increase over time and as the woodland develops and matures.</p><p> </p><p>For example, the change of land use means that some public benefits such as water quality improvement are achieved immediately. Within the first 5 years benefits to soil infiltration (for flood risk management) and biodiversity can be seen, with different species benefiting as the woodland becomes established. We very much welcome this analysis and will be responding in a timeframe that reflects the urgency of this crucial issue.</p><p> </p><p>The Government is driving forward its manifesto commitment to plant 11 million trees over the course of this parliament.</p><p> </p><p>We have kick started a vast Northern Forest, which will see 50 million trees planted from Liverpool to Hull; allocated £10 million to plant new trees in our towns and cities through the urban trees challenge fund; and appointed a Tree Champion to lead our engagement on a new English Tree Strategy. In the Autumn Budget, the Chancellor announced £50 million to help plant new woodlands through the Woodland Carbon Guarantee.</p><p> </p><p>We have recently consulted on Best Practice Guidance and issued the Urban Tree Manual, which support the sustainable management of trees. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 14/05/2019 answer text <p>This is a devolved matter and the information provided therefore relates to England only.</p><p> </p><p>The Government has planted 15 million trees since 2010, and remains committed to planting 11 million trees in this Parliament, 2017-22. Woodland creation is a key activity of our 25 Year Environment Plan.</p><p> </p><p>The Forestry Commission routinely publishes statistics on planting rates as part of its Corporate Performance Indicators. The latest figures show that from April 2017 to end March 2019 at least 3.2 million trees have been planted, equivalent to approximately 2,083 hectares of woodland creation.</p><p> </p><p>The Government’s support for this woodland creation has predominantly been from the Countryside Stewardship scheme. Further Government support has been through the Environment Agency and National Forest Company.</p><p><strong> </strong></p><p>In the Autumn Budget the Government announced an additional £60 million for tree planting initiatives, comprising £10 million to fund urban tree planting and £50 million for a Woodland Carbon Guarantee scheme. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 07/02/2019 answer text <p>We have planted 15 million trees since 2010, and the Government is committed to planting 11 million trees in the countryside, and one million trees in our towns and cities, in this Parliament. We are confident that this commitment will be met with over three million trees planted in this Parliament to date. The Government has made major commitments to help meet these targets: in January last year, the Prime Minister announced £5.7 million to launch the new Northern Forest; and in the Autumn Budget, the Chancellor announced £50 million to support the planting of new woodlands through the Woodland Carbon Guarantee, together with £10 million to plant new trees in our towns and cities through the urban trees challenge fund.</p><p> </p><p>In addition to tree planting, the UK Government’s Clean Growth Strategy set out plans for the restoration of peatland. Peatlands store huge quantities of carbon as plant matter is transformed into peat. In April 2018, £10 million of funding for peatland restoration was allocated to four large-scale peatland restoration projects in England. Annual figures are provided in the same report.</p><p> </p><p>A separate report has been produced by the Forestry Commission using the best available information <em>New Planting of Trees Supported by the Rural Development Programme for England, and other forms of Government Support; April 2010 to September 2018. </em>This gives a breakdown of government supported planting by region, local authority area and parliamentary constituency. A draft copy of this report, which is subject to further review, has been placed in the library.
