The NIHR welcomes funding applications for research into any aspect of human health. However, the NIHR has not conducted any research into links between head injuries sustained through sport and motor neurone disease.</p><p>It is not usual practice to ring-fence funds for particular topics or conditions. Applications are subject to peer review and judged in open competition, with awards being made on the basis of the importance of the topic to patients and health and care services, value for money and scientific quality. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 26/07/2019 answer text <p>The Medical Research Council (MRC) covers basic through to translational research, with translational research and applied, clinical, public health and social care research funded by the Department via the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).</p><p>The NIHR’s funding for research includes support for research infrastructure which is critically important in providing the resources, support and facilities that the National Health Service needs to conduct first-class research across the full pathway of discovery science to evaluation. The sustained, long-term funding to put in place through the NIHR infrastructure has been widely recognised as having transformed the health research environment in the United Kingdom. For example, there has been five-fold increase in early phase (phase I and phase II) trials since 2009 within the NIHR early translational research infrastructure in the NHS (2,842 phase I and phase II trials in 2017/18 compared to just 496 in 2009/10).</p><p>The MRC are also currently undertaking an evaluation of 10 years of MRC-funded translation research which is expected to be completed in September 2019.</p><p>The MRC and the NIHR also work in partnership through the Efficacy and Mechanism Evaluation programme which funds studies evaluating interventions with potential to make a step-change in the promotion of health, treatment of disease and improvement of rehabilitation or long-term care.</p><p> </p><p><strong> </strong></p><p><strong> </strong></p> answering member constituency Gosport answering member printed Caroline Dinenage question first answered 26/07/2019 11:44:44 answering member 4008 label Biography information for Dame Caroline Dinenage

answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 23/07/2019 answer text <p>The Department responded to the Prevention of Future Deaths Report issued by the Assistant Coroner for the Eastern Area of Greater London following the inquest into the death of Sophie Holman on 24 April 2019.</p><p>Publication of the Department’s response is a matter for the Chief Coroner as set out in Coroners (investigations) Regulations 2013.</p><p>The Government is committed to doing all it can to ensure the National Health Service learns from tragic, avoidable deaths and provides high quality, safe care for all patients. This is demonstrated by publication of the NHS Patient Safety Strategy on 2 July 2019. Friend the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care met regularly with the former Chancellor (Rt. hon Philip Hammond MP) and other Cabinet colleagues to discuss a range of issues related to funding for medical research and development.</p><p>The Department’s National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) budget for 2019/20 is just over £1 billion and welcomes funding applications for research into any aspect of human health. Applications are subject to peer review and judged in open competition, with awards being made on the basis of the importance of the topic to patients and health and care services, value for money and scientific quality. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 15/07/2019 answer text <p>The Accelerated Access Collaborative (AAC) is interested in identifying and supporting strategically important products that will have the biggest impact on patient health outcomes and/or the delivery of National Health Service services. This may include those which help control hospital-acquired infections.</p><p>The AAC has already had made significant progress towards getting the best innovations to patients quicker and at a better cost for the NHS.</p><p>Since 2018, NHS England has been supporting SecurAcath and Plus Sutures, products designed to reduce infection rates, on the Innovation and Technology Payment programme. SecurAcath is a device to secure catheters that reduces the infection risk for patients with a peripherally inserted central catheter and has benefited over 80,000 patients.
