answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 08/01/2019 answer text <p>As Mark Lowcock, the UN Under Secretary General, explained to the UN Security Council on 23 October, Yemen’s recent economic crisis threatens to tip the country into famine, with the Yemeni Riyal losing over 40% of its value from June to October 2018.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The UK led discussions with the US, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates so the Central Bank of Yemen could release $270 million, provided by Saudi Arabia, in letters of credit to support commercial food importers with foreign currency to purchase wheat and other staples for import. These measures have resulted in an appreciation of the Riyal, and prices of staples are starting to decline which means that ordinary Yemenis are more able to buy food that is in the markets.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>However, much more remains to be done. We welcome the positive outcomes of consultations in Stockholm and continue to encourage further constructive and urgent engagement on the economy. The Foreign Secretary met the foreign ministers of the United States, United Arab Emirates and Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on 27 September at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The Foreign Secretary urged a renewed push for political progress and discussed how to put in place confidence-building measures. He urged his counterpart to seize the opportunity for political progress. The Emirati Foreign Minister underlined his complete support for the UN process led by Special Envoy Martin Griffiths. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 10/07/2018 answer text <p>Following the start of military action by Coalition-backed forces to take Hodeidah port back from Houthi militia, the previous Foreign Secretary made a statement on 13 June in which he called on all parties to respect International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and prioritise the protection of civilians. We regularly raise the importance of compliance with IHL with the Saudi-led Coalition at all levels. When allegations of Coalition IHL violations are made, we insist that they are investigated and that any lessons are acted upon. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 11/06/2018 answer text <p>We regularly raise, at the highest levels, the importance of compliance with International Humanitarian Law (IHL) with Saudi Arabia. The UK takes allegations of IHL violations extremely seriously. We encourage the Saudi-led Coalition to ensure that any such allegations are thoroughly investigated. Saudi Arabia has publicly stated that it is investigating reports of alleged violations of IHL, and that lessons will be acted upon. The Coalition has the best insight into its own military procedures and is able to conduct the most thorough and conclusive investigations. This also allows the coalition to really understand what may have gone wrong and apply any lessons learnt in the best possible way.
