answer text <p>Foetal alcohol syndrome disorders can have a significant impact on the early years development of children, their behaviours and their life chances.</p><p>Public Health England collects some data on fetal alcohol sydrome, but we recognise that this data does not reflect the range of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD), as these are very difficult to diagnose. That is why we are engaging experts and those affected by FASD to explore what more could be done to improve our understanding.</p> more like this

answer text <p>The standard of medical training is the responsibility of the General Medical Council (GMC) and the training curricula for postgraduate trainee doctors is set by the relevant medical Royal College, and has to meet the standards set by the GMC. Whilst curricula do not necessarily highlight specific conditions for doctors to be aware of, they instead emphasise the skills and approaches that a doctor must develop in order to ensure accurate and timely diagnoses and treatment plans for their patients.</p> more like this

answer text <p>The Government recognises that Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) can have a significant impact on the early years development of children, their behaviours and their life chances. Early intervention services can help reduce some of the effects of FASD and prevent some of the secondary disabilities that result. Responsibility for commissioning these services lies with clinical commissioning groups.</p><p> </p><p>The UK Chief Medical Officers’ low risk drinking guidelines provide the public with the most up to date scientific information to help people make informed decisions about their own drinking. The guideline for women who are pregnant or think they could become pregnant, is that the safest approach is not to drink alcohol at all, to reduce risks to the baby to a minimum.</p><p> </p><p>The Department is organising an expert roundtable to examine the issues surrounding FASD. This meeting will be chaired by the Deputy Chief Medical Officer.</p> more like this

answer text <p>Only information on individuals with severe cases of foetal alcohol syndrome – those identified at birth - is collected and reported by Public Health England. Therefore there is a significant underestimation of the overall prevalence.</p><p> </p><p>The figures currently available relate to births in 2012-2016, and cover five regions in England: the South West, East Midlands and South Yorkshire, Wessex, Thames Valley, and Northern England (including North East and Cumbria). answer text <p>The United Kingdom Chief Medical Officers’ low risk drinking guidelines advise women who are pregnant or think they could become pregnant that the safest approach is not to drink alcohol at all, to reduce risks to the baby to a minimum.</p><p> </p><p>Public Health England's Start4Life programme also provides information via its website on the impact of drinking alcohol during pregnancy, including the risk of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD).</p><p> </p><p>The Government recognises that FASD can have a significant impact on the early year’s development of children, their behaviours and their life chances. Early intervention services can help reduce some of the effects of FASD and prevent some of the secondary disabilities that result. Responsibility for commissioning these services lies with clinical commissioning groups.</p><p> </p><p>The Government is providing additional investment of £1 billion per year by 2020/21 for mental health services in the National Health Service to meet the ambitions set out in NHS England’s ‘Implementing the Five Year Forward View for Mental Health’.
