<p>Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is caused by changes to the pulmonary arteries, but
as these changes can be caused by a number of internal structural changes and medical
conditions, it is difficult to target a reduction in incidence of PH.</p><p> </p><p>However,
where PH is caused by an underlying lung condition such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary
Disease (COPD), the Department’s action to reduce incidence of the condition also
contributes to a reduction in incidence of PH. The Department is taking action to
prevent cases of COPD in the first place, through initiatives including the recently
published tobacco control plan and its commitment to tackling obesity.</p>
